Helio’s Ocean granted hot new native YouTube app; Downloads and Uploads now both totally mobile

yt1.jpg

I love YouTube. I mean I love it. I like unhinged videos of Mexican UFOs, crazy Japanese gameshows, and Lohan falling down. It’s unlimited entertainment, because there are more hours of content uploaded per day that there are hours in the day, meaning you could never possibly watch it all. And it’s all free.

Sadly, the world of online video is restricted to, for the most part, unwieldy computers. Helio made waves with its Ocean (ha!) by including a YouTube client, and later Apple did the same thing with the iPhone. Truth be told, iPhone’s YouTube viewer was better than the Ocean’s, but not anymore.

yt2.jpgAs of this morning, Ocean users can download a brand new YouTube app for the Ocean, and it’s not just better than the current Ocean viewer, it outguns the iPhone’s.

It’s a great way to search for your videos and your favorites as well, but that’s only half the fun.

The Ocean is known for having a good, easy to use camera for both photos and video; Helio’s HelioUP feature has allowed you to upload vids on your camera directly to your YouTube account, though it was janky.

The new YouTube app allows you to upload from within the app itself; click the “upload” button, and you’re prompted to select an existing video from your Ocean’s memory or recording a new one. For video bloggers, this is a godsend.

And it’s free. You can download it now from your Ocean’s “download app” menu, and it won’t cost you anything. So to recap, you get a free app giving you tons of free content, and Helio’s plans include free data. What’s to lose? We keep saying the Ocean, with Helio’s service, is the device to watch, and every time an improvement like this hits the hardware, we’re proven a little bit more correct.

Bad article (written by teenager?)

You have an entire article here premised on the fact that the Ocean app “blows the iPhone app away” or whatever, but you never say why.

Here’s a tip.

You can’t just write junk you feel and call it a review.

You have to be objective, logical, and have an actual argument.

@ Jeremy: dude, it lets you upload to YouTube as well. iPhone can’t do that. Thus it’s better by a wide margin. In addition, it’s on a 3G network, not a silly 2.5G EDGE connection, so you don’t have to hound around for a hotspot to get your fix. I get the feeling that you’re a big iPhone fan not wanting to see that the emporer has no clothes. Or a video cameras. C’mon, dude, get cynical.

@Matt
Glad I had to read the comments to find that out. Any ways wifi beats 3G

why do all the iphone fanboys always clamor about wifi>3G? Do you live in the boondocks or something? In any metro city 3G>wifi. I’m not running around tryin to find a hotspot - it comes to me.

I hate iphone fanboys!!!

Yes WiFi beats 3G…. however 3G beats EDGE and when my girlfriend and I are driving from Las Vegas to Newport Beach or elsewhere in California for a vacation there are no WiFi spots in the middle of the desert during about 250 of those miles from here to there…. but that wouldn’t matter too much anyway would it? Seeing as how iPhone doesn’t have GPS capabilities.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge fan of Apple and their products. The past few years I’ve been working on replacing all of my Windows computers with Apple’s computers. However I think they could have done a LOT better with the iPhone. I also don’t want to run around searching for a WiFi hot spot. My girlfriends sister recently got the iPod Touch and I had to wireless network her house just to use the best of it. My point is: Yes WiFi is great, but trying to find out isn’t so fun…. and trying to find one you are allowed to connect to (that isn’t private) is even more annoying. It’s like someone waving a steak in front of you and just as you go to bite down you realize you’re behind three inches of glass.

Apple’s iPhone has many great features but before I go out and spend $400 on a device I need to be damn certain I’m actually going to be able to use it when I need it.

Which is why I’m getting the Helio Ocean as soon as my Verizon contract is up in a few months. Maybe, just maybe, by the time THAT contract is up two years from now the iPhone will have come a long way (and the price dropped a few more times).

@bpm2000 — If you paid more for an inferior product and you’re an image conscious person to begin with (Apple’s are purty) you have to tell yourself something to not feel like a fool. Substance > Style

I have the Ocean, downloaded YouTube and I have yet to view a full video as it continues to timeout. Not liking this application yet, it hurts because I was really looking forward to it.

The YouTube App is very nice. It blows the iphone away because you can actually stream the video in real time versus having to wait for it prebuffer. It’s like comparing dialup to broadband. Some of the deals like http://www.heliobuy.com is prepackaging this application with the Ocean.

I’ll let you guys know i owned a helio ocean for a little over 15 days it had problems. My phone would receive calls while idle aka black screen. when i tried to replace it under warrienty i went through three tech support people all making do the same things, take my battery out, then reprogram my phone then when that didn’t work hard reset, and after that didn’t the tech support dushe told me that i had to pay 50 dollars to replace my phone through my phone insurance. mind you i owned the phone for 15 days. so when i asked about a warrinty exchange the guy wanted to go through the three tests again. thats when i cancelled my phone when i went to get my refund on my phone they took 50 dollars off my refund for restocking. theres more but i want to keep it directed towards the phone itself. also while i was waiting for my refund another guy was getting a refund and too others had promblems with thier oceans glitching and a friend who has the phone calls people and 50% of the people she calls never receive her call. overall helio and thier phones get a 1 out of 5 and thats only cause 0 out of five is to harsh.
