Van Halen, Dave Matthews Band now in ringtone form

Here’s a tip for bands that don’t make new music any more. If you’re offered to sell your songs as ringtones, do it. It’s one of the last places that most people are still actively (and even happily) overpaying for music.
Dave Matthews Band has been crapping out live albums left and right but hasn’t released a new album in over two years and they’re worried about selling out to ringtones. Get over yourselves, just like everyone else got over you back when you slipped into irrelevancy five years ago.
And Van Halen, on a reunion tour, decides to pad it a bit by finally selling some ringtones as they make one last push to round out that nest egg. Very wise, actually. I’m still cool with Van Halen — bonus points for longevity.

Has piracy hit the music industry so hard that the only place to sell music is on ringtones?

I don’t know, but I just downloaded a “Baby Got Back” ringtone for free after clicking 17 links.

@Paul: That’s part of it but the other half is that phones are so locked down by carriers that the only way to get ringtones on most of them is to buy them for as much or more than the entire song costs.

That’s the tradeoff - either spend too much or suffer through endless ads (does everything have to be ad-supported these days?). I’ve tried a few of the make-your-own ringtone sites. I guess they are all somewhat similar but the one I like is DJ Nitrogen - it’s not free (well, the first ringtone is) but it’s lower cost than the carriers and has no ads. If I get the copyright thing correctly, this is all within the fair use rules of music I already own. I think I’ve given Verizon enough of my money.

Who got over DMB 5 years ago when they slipped where???? LOL, get a clue. There one of the best live acts in the world today, and you obviously don’t know that. Maybe you should read up before you write.
