"Anyway, things are looking up for renewables, but we’re a long ways away from seeing anything actually happen on this front."

...in the US my friend. Portugal has just commissioned the world's first wave energy farm, based on the Pelamis technology, with a nominal capacity of 2.25MW on a 1st stage, with an a total of 20MW in the pipeline in case productivity results are up to the estimates. And I must say the aquabuoy sounds much more effective than the Pelamis, but since financial due dilligence gave the green light on the latter based on the many pilot projects it went through, that's what's floating right now...
There also at least three wave energy development centers in the EU that I'm aware of, and it's just a matter of getting the tech stabilized - ie cheaper - before it becomes a real alternative, much like what happened with wind energy. U just gotta get the lobbying right ;)
Some examples of % of renewable energy in the power generation mix: Portugal = 42%; Sweden = 70%; Iceland = 100% (!!! - geothermal rules)

Things can change really fast...
