one of your fellow Crunchgearians just wrote a big article about the iPhone actually being a smart phone.
LOLS.
I am about to post a link to this post in my comment over there!

Yeah I see your point now. I guess it is just a touchy subject, even among non-apple-fanbois like me.
Maybe iPhone 2.0 will have actual forming buttons on it's magic screen... and it will fold my socks. I'm still waiting on that one.
Nice to settle a dispute in a civil manner for once! I am always used to being the fanboi (PSP fanboi FTW) or fighting the fanboi.

I'll just keep on listening to Franz Ferdinand and we can all keep on waiting for the perfect iPhone.

I agree with you Peter,

The iPhone is not a great phone to have if you are a hardcore messenger. However, It easily has the best web browsing experience of any phone smart or not. The visual voicemail is a nice feature that should be standard on all phones. I have a WinMo5 PPC, which I prefer over the iPhone only because I can install third party apps, but for my wife who doesn't care about Third Party apps, the iPhone meets all of her needs perfectly.

For the record I am not an apple fanboy, I actually prefer to use my XP or Fedora computers over my iMac, but I think apple really did a great job with the iPhone. I'll be watching very closely for the next generation iPhones to have more bluetooth pairing options, be able to install third party apps (I need mobile excel or an equivalent), and at least be able to synch contacts, mail, and calendar over bluetooth with our Mac.

Like everything else in this world, use the right tool for the job!

Fair enough, dwalk. I don't like the virtual keyboard because I've been on a traditional QWERTY for some time. I have access to an iPhone whenever and I've tried 'practicing' on the keyboard and I just can't type as fast on it as I can on other devices. For instance, I can't walk and text on the iPhone where as on the Curve and Ocean it's quite easy because of the physical buttons. The SDK is still coming out next year, but we're doing a 'smart phones now' package. Heh.

It's a good device, but needs more work. It has the WOW factor everyone wants, but it can't do what I want when I want. That's what it boils down to. I wonder if iPhone owners previously owned other QWERTY/smartphone/not-so-smartphone devices? Maybe the fanboys outside the tech/gadget world just don't know any better and that's why they're so hard core about it. Just something to think about.

But you see that I"m pointing out its actual flaws instead of saying it just sucks without giving any reasons, right?

Well I must agree that you've made fine points based on the systems flaws, but it does seem to me that in your hate of the iPhone you have exagerated your personal problems with the phone, and addressed them as design flaws. Some other iPhone users may argue that the virtual keyboard is quite usable after a few days of using it. As opposed to dismissing phone as simply not for heavy texters. And is it fair to call the iPhone "locked down" when an official SDK is just around the corner? Unless something happened to it that I didn't hear about, but that is unlikely. But remember! People aren't bad people, horses are bad people.

Juicy dose of opinion? Come on, dwalk. My opinion is based around the features of each phone. Granted, I am a bit of an iPhone hater, but I made it very clear that the iPhone is nothing more than a bloated media device that's locked down. The Touch is much better, too. Sure it has the wow factor, but it's far from perfect just like everything else.

I clearly stated why each was on the list. Of course, I put in my opinion, otherwise you'd be reading a spec sheet. Am I wrong or is my anti-iPhone mindset clouding my judgement?

As I have done before I call BS on your iPhone hate.
You need to be more impartial. Not favoring any of them, just listing reasons why they don't qualify as smartphones.
If I wanted to read your opinion on all these phones then maybe you should have warned me that they were intoxicated with a juicy dose of opinion.
But the iPhone is particularly disappointing, for the reasons you listed. But the cool factor makes up for all of those... except 3G, but we get that sometime next June. So it's all good.
