I dive and shoot with a Canon. I've used a disposable camera once and it was pretty awful. This reminds me a lot of them. 3.1 isn't too bad. I actually started with a 3.2 and got some decent shots. It's a decent idea though. It is sometimes hard to determine what exactly your camera is looking at if the screen is small so this might shed some light here.
