Ultimate Ears Super.fi 4vi: the review AND the giveaway (YES THAT MEANS FREE STUFF)

superfi4vi.jpg
If you’re the owner of an iPhone, then you’ve no doubt begrudged the stupid recessed headphone jack and spent many a night lying awake, hoping for a resolution to come swiftly in the night. If you don’t own an iPhone, you probably have no idea what I’m talking about, so move along. There’s nothing to see here.

Alright, now that they’re gone, I’m going to be frank with you all. I have a love-hate relationship with the iPhone. I know I slandered it to no end before its release, but after the price drop, I couldn’t help myself — I needed a new iPod and I’m an AT&T customer, what choice did I have really?

While the device has its problems, for the sake of this review, we’re only going to focus on one: Apple’s crazy decision to use a recessed headphone jack; a decision that, without a clunky adapter, rendered useless every decent set of headphones out there. And even with the adapter, your headphones have no mic or toggle button, which is one of the coolest things of the iPhone. It was a conundrum of epic proportions.

Six months out, however, we have some options. Biggs recently recommended the V-Moda Vibe Duo, a completely valid solution priced at a reasonable $89. They include all the features found on the Apple’s exorbitantly priced, piece of crap stock headphones, except they don’t suck. The one major setback is that the cloth cords, while very cool looking and seemingly sturdy, tend to knot up — a nuisance I couldn’t bare.

Fortunately for me (and all iPhone owners, really), headphone heartthrob Ultimate Ears has decided to dive into the iPhone arena with the Super.fi 4vi ear buds. Built from the same drivers found in UE’s Super.fi line, the 4vi incorporates a mic and a toggle button. The toggle, I should note, is aces. Unlike the V-Moda and Apple, UE created a separate toggle box that isn’t attached to the microphone. This is a particular advantage over the Vibe Duo whose toggle button is clumsily placed and nearly impossible to push quickly (and impossible to push with gloves on).

In terms of sound, the 4vi is far and away the best iPhone specific headphones that I currently know of. While not exactly in the same class as earbuds like the Triple.fi 10 pros, the 4vi model achieves a full range of sound in a tightly packed package with attractive aluminum canisters. The included silicone tips allow you to completely shut out ambient noises, so no more being subjected to beggars, tourists, crappy street musicians, people handing out stupid fliers and, most importantly beggars. Good times.

Like all UE products, the 4vi offer superior sound quality at a price, $150 in this case. Sure it’s half as much as you spent on your iPhone, but you own an iPhone, you’re not one to skimp on status symbols.

But if you simply can’t muster the scratch for a pair, you’re in luck. We’re giving away one pair of the Super.fi 4vi in an old school CrunchGear reader response contest. Between now and Monday at 1 p.m. EST comment your little hearts out on any CrunchGear post.

We will select a winner based on various criteria including frequency of posts, quality of said posts and, if all else fails, coin tosses. To win, you MUST enter your email address in the commenter information field. Comments without email addresses will not be counted as entries. Now get started.

Dang, this is pretty amazing–the only thing I’ve been wishing for my iPhone is wireless headphones with a mic, and I haven’t heard of any, but this is still a definite improvement. Was the most incredibly annoying thing to discover the recessed jack, and I’d kinda said screw it all when I saw the overpriced crap at the Apple store. Care to help a poor student out with a pair?

A little thing called an exacto knife solve the recessed headphone jack issue and if you do carefully then it’s barely noticable.

I did the razor blade trick on a stereo jack/rca adapter for my car stereo and it worked fine. I could not do the same thing to my headphones because they travel on my person. Id like to have these, Im giving my beat up iPhone to my wife and would like to sweeten the deal.

Well, I don’t actually have an iPhone, but I do have a 5g iPod that really needs better pair of headphones. And I could use them with an iPhone if I’m lucky enough to get one for Christmas. Anyway I would like to be entered!

Yeah, I hate that recessed jack. None of my headphones work with it, which is a shame because I’ve probably spent close to $1000 on my headphone collection. I don’t really want to go out to buy another pair just to use with the iPhone though. Let’s just hope the next generation iPhone has a better design.

that sounds good but 150?! Good god, those Bose Trio headphones are only like 130 right. That’s over 500 bucks for a phone and a headset. Which is almost half as much as a new mac book. The economy must be booming, and I thought we were in a recession.

I purchased a pair superfi 3 and I can’t wait to see how this will perform. I currently love this product with the detailed sound quality it delivers. We all have different ear buds, and hearing satisfaction, but i can say that this is quite good.

Oh man, I was totally going to buy a pair of these today…guess I’ll wait till monday now. Thanks for Apple’s extended holiday hours. Phew!

I’ve only heard good things about these buds….keeps me a little skeptical…are they too good to be true?

Is this strictly a quantity over quality thing? Or can the quality of the post boost the postcount score? Because I kind of want these.

It’s great to see an alternative to other iphone headsets. I currently own a pair of V-moda vibe duos that are good, but not great. They are too bass heavy in the frequency department. You lose a lot of the high end frequencies. I wish I was patient enough to buy these instead. I also like the 26db noise isolation and the long(er) cord. I am a drummer who wanted a great pair of isolation headphones for my iphone (my main mp3 player) and the V-moda’s cord is too short. I can’t wait to get my hands on it!!!

Well, three days ago I broke the headphones used with my notebook. And I’ve since been searching “Ebay” for a reasonable pair of ear buds…..under or at thirty dollars, not including shipping.

Currently, employed P/T, twenty hours a week via a Senior Citizens work
program which stymies my net income. In my search. I stumbled on your add and being able to resume my listing pleasures with the well sought FI4VI’s would truly bring a bang to my New Year, 2008.

Thanx,

Kenneth

What about the stuff from Ultimate Buds? I still like the looks and design of the Apple cord better and I hear those guys build nice stuff using the original apple cord.

After reading tons of reviews on various styles of headphones, and even considering getting the Shure adapter for my iPhone I decided to get this headset.

Compared to the stock iPhone head phones it’s night and day. It’s not even close the amount of clarity these bring to the table… there isn’t really a lot to say if you are comparing them to the stock iPhone head set. It’s better in every aspect audio wise. Cleaner Bass, Cleaner Mids, and Highs. Better sound isolation, so you can hear your music at lower volumes.

It comes with a nice stylish headphone case. As do most headphones, but this one is actually small enough to fit in your pocket with out discomfort. I might possibly use this one, as apposed to wrapping the headset around the iPhone when I’m not using it. Definitely a plus.

Now, the only “real” comparison I have for these head phones is against my Shure E3G head phones, and my Steel Sounds 5h (version 1) Headset.

The Steel Sound 5h is a computer gaming headset, but sounds absolutely amazing, I have a link to it later in the review. Keep in mind that it’s not earbud, it’s a standard over the ear headphone.

I’ve been an owner of the e3g headphones for a little over a year.

To test the headphones, I got my older 60gig 5th Gen iPod often times refered to as “iPod Classic”. I compared it to several types of songs with no EQ settings, just unplugging, and switching headphones, not changing volume levels.

My Shure e3g headphones have better isolation than the Super .fi 4vi, but the Super .fi aren’t advertised at isolation headphones, where the Shure e3g are. The Super .fi how ever do Isolate, just not as well… it still drowns out the typing on my keyboard, or the snapping of my fingers when they are a foot or so away from my face.

Bass: This was my biggest concern with every earbud headphone/set i’ve thought about purchasing. ALOT of it has to do with getting a “GOOD” seal in your ear… you can change the positioning just a fraction and have the difference between “NO” bass, and “WOW” that sounds good.

the Super .fi have more bass than my e3g. Fresh out of the box, with about 10 mins of fiddling around trying to get a “perfect” fit, they have alittle more defined bass than the e3g. I am very pleased with the bass, which from reading reviews of this product people said it was lack luster… I don’t find that to be the case at all.

How ever, if you don’t have them positioned in your ears just right, the bass is GONE, NONE, very lacking. These earbuds don’t go in my ear NEAR as far as the e3g. Which means the fit is more impt, and harder to find. How ever, faster to remove and insert once you get used to finding the “g” spot.

Over all, the bass is nice. Not as rich as my Steel Sound 5h head set (which is not a earbud set)

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000UP83SQ/sr=8-1/qid=1199481684/ref=pd_cp_e_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1199481684&sr=8-1&pf_rd_p=250314601&pf_rd_s=center-41&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000IC0VYA&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0EPG3MAV3N29HGQR85HF

(My Steel Sound 5h is V1, not V2 just a note)

Recap of the Bass. I am very pleased with it… Better than e3g/e3c and being how iPhone/iPods distort bass if you boost it, what I find my self doing if i want more is turn on the “treble reducer” EQ.

How ever, with this headset I run no EQ… the bass is perfect.

Mids/Treble: Very clean, very clear. I find that the e3g is almost too bright, and punchy on treble. I found my self running a treble reducer on my iPod just because the treble was so over powering with the e3g. The balance is perfect on the Super .fi 4vi. The mids sound better than the e3g, and the highs are balanced better.

These headphones have a great fidelity they sound very true, very crisp, very accurate.

Did I mention they look very nice as well? Stylish look. Black cord, Nickel color headphones.

The Cons: Price. $150ish, is alot, I got mine a little cheaper, but still over $100 (at the time of this review)

The phone button/pause/next track button is hard to press. And if you’re like me, you’re thinking “You idiots just can’t press it” No… it really is hard to press. I can switch tracks, and do everything with it just perfectly, but it’s not near as easy to press as the stock iPhone headset. Which is the only down side to the headphones I’ve found yet. If the button was more like the stock iPhones it’d be perfect.

These are truly fine earbuds, and far more comfortable for long-term wear than Apple’s stock hard Chiclet variety. They isolate ambient sound so thoroughly that listening while walking around, life becomes a scored soundtrack experience.

But Ultimate Ears has quality control issues with their China-made buds. Mine lasted 10 days in normal use before the left earbud died from a short in the wire at or near the earpiece.

Let’s see. $149 plus tax divided by 10 days. It’s an expensive habit.

I would have to say that I am a music person. I love music. Creating music and listening to music. When I got my first iPod I fell in love with apple products and have been buying them ever since. A few months ago I purchased my beloved iPhone and, I have to say that it is the SWEETEST piece of technology I have ever had the honor of owning. I would have to say though that finding an adequate pair of earphones has become the great quest of my life. About 2 years ago I finally found an awesome pair of in ear monitors by futuresonic but since then they have worn out and my quest has begun again. I have been reading tons of reviews and looking at different models but its hard. The iPhone with its recessed jack makes it difficult not to mention that I would like to be able to answer my phone without fumbling to remove my earphones. The apple branded phones are nice but they are constantly coming out of my ears. When I found out about Ultimate Ears new model I was floored and the price isn’t too bad if they are as good as I’ve heard.

You got me. I tend to not post, but the thought of no longer having to hold the bottom of my iphone up to my face when answering a call with headphones is too good.

I’m a business user. I love Apple, but because every dang business related website out there only works with IE, I’m screwed. I’m rooting for firefox. If all these applications go web enabled (SaaS), and you can only use IE, where does that leave us? Stuck with Microsoft.

I also wish someone would come up with a reasonable and free way to sync gmail/google apps contacts with a phone over the air and automatically. I’ve almost moved to Yahoo a couple of times so I can sync contacts and get push email. I used to have a blackberry…

And finally, Apple needs to take a page from Blackberry’s book and make a good case for the iPhone. Most of the ones I’ve seen just plain suck. We finally have a great pair of headphones, we’ve got ‘enterprise funtionality’ coming on the iPhone (I’m guessing exchange connectors) and we just need a good leather holster.

That is my best shot at a free pair (of headphones). Thanks for the review.
