Merry Christmas, kids!

A commenter just visited GameStop to pick up his red hot Nintendo Wii rain check. What did he get? No special card, no fancy case. Just a piece of ragged paper.

Wii Rain Check – REALITY: NO CASE; NO CARD; just a register receipt!!!

Unlike reported at all the sites, I just purchased my raincheck from my local GameStop store in Wilson, NC and all I got was a cash register receipt. They had heard nothing of the DVD-like cases with a gift card inside. Just a plain receipt with a barcode. They have my name and number and a promise to call when it arrives. But nothing to put “under the tree” other than the receipt!!!

Another broken promise from Nintendo??!!??!!

  • OK, I left the original comment, but did NOT authorize the above picture (Mario as Rock Star making a gesture) to go with my comment.

  • I would also like to add that I do NOT blame the staff at the local GameStop store. The 2 young men on duty were extremely helpful and courteous, despite the line outside the door.

  • the picture is sweet!!……. never liked Gamestop…..

  • well, you were supposed to get a little case and stuff. The local gamestop guys are great, I’m sure, but nintendo and gamestop management is probably to blame here.

  • I’m not sure why anyone is getting the rainchecks anyway. My mother-in-law was able to get 2 Wiis (one for us, one for my niece) just by calling around and going to the store on the day some arrived. Amazon had Wiis in stock this morning – I got a text message from nowinstock.net when they showed up as available, and had I needed one, could have bought one. They lasted about 20 minutes.

  • I did receive a DVD case (the insert was of the graphic on the original post) and a little “Your gift is coming!” coupon.

You might have waited for another comment or two before prematurely blasting Nintendo.

Maybe they were still in a box buried in the back room somewhere….

    (Oh, and it’s GameStop)

    Dear Valued Customer,

    Thanks for contacting us.

We apologize for the confusion. No broken promise. Some of our stores
just didn’t receive their shipment of these special cases. This was
identified and we overnighted the product to those stores today.

I’m surprised the store didn’t offer to call you when they arrived.
None the less, you are entitled to this and I feel confident that you’ll
get one to put under the tree. Ask to speak with the store manager and
I’m sure he will arrange for you to get one.

    Best Regards,
    Daniel

  • I love that even now, a year out from the Wii launch, they’re having supply problems. Nintendo needs to get its act together.

  • Just got a PHONE CALL from my local GameStop, and sure enough, as mentioned in the e-mail I received 30 minutes before (see above), they just got the GiftCards/Cases in today’s shipment. I can come by any time to pick mine up!!!

    Thanks for the help!!

  • HA! Hilarious. Congrats. Get ye your little case.

  • Lol! Yep. Got have SOMETHING for the kids to unwrap!!

  • Why would this be Nintendo’s fault? GameStop is doing the rain check promotion; Nintendo just happens to make the product they’re giving rain checks on.

  • Yeah, the DVD case + coupon I received certainly appeared to be GameStop-branded.

  • Nintendo is, at least partially, to blame since they issued the initial press releases, and struck the deal with GameStop.

  • At my local mall’s Gamestop, only a few people arrived before 8am, and they had 48 rainchecks to sell. I specifically asked about the DVD case, but they did not have any. However, at 2pm they called to tell me that my Wii console had arrived. Allllrighty then.

  • Guess what they’re counting on?

A bunch of people losing their receipts.

    • That would so suck.

But yeah, the mall I went to today told us they still had wii rain checks and then when I waited for like 30 min. in line they told me there weren’t any there any more. Then I found another Game Stop who DID have it and bought it ASAP.

  • Pretty lame when a raincheck “holder,” so to speak, is also not available in the stores. “We don’t have the Wii, but we will give you an attractive raincheck DVD case to put under the tree. Oh, we don’t have those either, unless you want to make another trip to pick one up when we get those in.”

I mean they publicized the “DVD case with message inside” for the past few weeks. GameStop could not make sure all the stores had the cases in stock for today?

This may be the writing on the wall about the certainty of getting the Wii by the promised date. Read the receipt. I bet there is some kind of disclaimer saying that GameStop or Nintendo will not be liable should the Wii not arrive by January ___ [whatever the date is.] Probably says that the delivery date is an estimate, not a promise.

  • It’s just a normal receipt. There is no language specific to the Wii or Jan 25th.

  • Got my call this evening for my rain check Wii!! (I was 3rd in line for the rain check and was the OP from Wilson, NC). I am at work, but will pick up my Wii tomorrow morning!! (Only 1 week +12 hours later!!!)
