Dave Winer goes into into an Apple store and asked them to replace his hard drive out of warranty. They sold him 80 GB for $160 and then told you that he couldn’t have his old drive back. And he’s upset.
Let it be said that while I don’t agree that Apple stores should “treat you different,” it is a pretty shitty policy. When you go to a mechanic they give you the parts they took out of your car in order to prove that they actually did the work and that you actually had a problem. While I’m sure Dave wasn’t about to refurb his drive himself, maybe they could have given him a little envelope to send it back after he cleared the drive of his collection of rare Bulgarian monkey pornography. Heck, just put a big degausser next to the counter. Clearly he wasn’t heading into the store expecting to lose all his data, but saying “This drive is ours now, man” is kind of dopey. Plus, now Dave hates Apple, and nobody wants that.

I feel for this guy. I went to the dentist the other day to get a tooth pulled because of decay and they wouldn’t let me have it. Was it rally decayed? They claimed it was a hazardous waste policy they had. I was like WTF? Hazardous WASTE? It came from my mouth. He acted like he just came IN my mouth!
OK…I’m not going to ask for my damn free earbuds anymore…but it sure would be nice.
This just really seems like a non-issue. Apple shouldn’t be so secretive and greedy in the repair process., and this guy should finds something else to bitch about.
I don’t get the kerfuffle. Dave had a chance to say, “OK, if you won’t give me the disk back, fergeddit.” There’s a CompUSA (still?) less than a mile from the Emptyville Apple store where he could’ve bought a replacement disk and installed it — maybe, even had techs there do it.
The original topic, how expensive Apple products are, is a bit exaggerated under the assumption that Dave’s time is worth more than $20 per hour. I’ve replaced many disks in my machines (my MBP is now waiting for an upgrade to its already-full 200 GB). Doing it right takes just some patience and common mechanical sense. In many circumstances, I’m happy to pay somebody else to do it & warranty the work.
Interesting how this went from a “gosh, this looks a bit steep” into a blizzard of vituperation against Apple as well as the “Jobs can do no wrong” stuff.
“If you don’t like the news, go out and make some of your own.”
This was pretty funny, must have upset those Apple fanboys a lot to see this. LOL
Steve Jobs is the devil!
Perhaps Apple as a manufacturer deal where a given part supplier may have a longer warranty with Apple than Apple has with it’s customers. That would explain why Apple needs to have the old part back. Apple needs to provide proof of failure to the original part supplier to get re-embursed?
Apple has to send the defective part back to the manufacturer for warranty reimbursement. Everyone is told before any repair is done that they won’t get their old part back.
dude
you suck really bad
Give up the comedy thing.
It’s Apple. Whaddya expect.
It’s Apple fans. Whaddya expect.
All is right with the world. Back to sleep.
Apple Fan and user, but admit that this is a funny video… Some truth in there, but much exaggeration. Maybe microsoft should run this video during the superbowl..
