That would explain why Apple needs to have the old part back. Apple needs to provide proof of failure to the original part supplier to get re-embursed? Dave had a chance to say, "OK, if you won't give me the disk back, fergeddit." There's a CompUSA (still?) less than a mile from the Emptyville Apple store where he could've bought a replacement disk and installed it -- maybe, even had techs there do it. I've replaced many disks in my machines (my MBP is now waiting for an upgrade to its already-full 200 GB). Doing it right takes just some patience and common mechanical sense. In many circumstances, I'm happy to pay somebody else to do it & warranty the work. I went to the dentist the other day to get a tooth pulled because of decay and they wouldn't let me have it. Was it rally decayed? They claimed it was a hazardous waste policy they had. I was like WTF? Hazardous WASTE? It came from my mouth. He acted like he just came IN my mouth! OK...I'm not going to ask for my damn free earbuds anymore...but it sure would be nice.
