They are not region free, although they can play a lot of games from PAL region. Until now wiis with chip have not been able to be blocked by nintendo, although on Super mario galaxy, they made some new DRM to make the game unplayable, but just reqquired a quick update from the chipmakers. You can choose not to upgrade the firmware but some of the games require the new firmware. I know someone that bricked his wii in China but was able to have it fixed. Not only will they play all regions of games, they have hacked into the games (like they do with DVD's) and you can buy Wii games for 5 RMB, about the equivalent of 75 cents per game.
