The above photo may be the work of a PS junkie or it may just be the real thing. In any case, the rumor mill is abuzz surrounding Macworld. This time around it’s all coming back to the purported multi-touch trackpad we told you about during the summer. Sure our sources duped us by saying it’d be out in October, but it’s better late then never. There’s also some talk going around about an external optical drive that will accompany the new sub-notebook. Matt and I will get everything sorted out on the 15th.
Apple Sub Notebook Hints: External Optical Drive, MultiTouch Trackpad? [Macrumors]

Sorry, but I’m calling bullshit right now.
I’m also calling B.S. You can’t have a touchpad that wide because your wrists would always be moving your cursor around while you type.
Do you own a Mac?
If yes you have certainly notice that when you type on the keyboard the trackpad go off.
But….well this wide trackpad is real shit, no way.
Actually, that’s not the case at all. I own a brand new macbook and when I type my wrists sometimes slide against the right-hand edge of the trackpad which I have configured to act as a vertical scroll. The effect is my document starts scrolling while I’m typing… so you are most definitly wrong.
Calling BS on JohnyD. The only reason you are having this problem is because of a 3rd party app being used to make the right-edge of the trackpad control scrolling.
Total, utter bullshit. How do you type? Where do you put your wrists?
But it’s been said that the iPhone doesn’t register touches when it’s put up to your face, so maybe the sensitivity of this trackpad doesn’t register palm movement. However, weight on the click part would certainly cause problems of constant clicking unless you keep your hands floating above it. Maybe that’s just some prototype.
Well, the size looks nice.
BS because of too big keys. In such a small device I see only mac book’s style keyboard.
At first I was excited (and I do think they will announce something like this) but my only question about this being legit is apple seems to be going away from the keyboard that is one the current mac book pro and towards what is currently on the macbook. Case and point the macbook and all the new keyboards for the imac. It may be legit but I have some questions with that.
Just a thought.
Sorry - quite apart from the points made above (the too-wide trackpad, the powerbook G4-style keyboard, etc.), the simple fact is that the shadows on the two laptops don’t match properly with the light source. Not even a very good photoshop job.
Still, I’d give the creator a B- for effort.
True about the shadows. The light is coming from two different directions.
false. there’s only one photo of someone who just happens to have this on their desk? plus — would apple really make that computer? that’s just not it - that’s a slimed down photoshop of a notebook from a few years back - not from next year.
you guys got me excited! I expected more…
The shadows look correct. It appears the light source is the middle of the laptops and behind them, so those shadows would be correct.
As far as the track pad being to large for typing, that would be false also. Apple has filed patents in the past for such track pads:
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/06/03/02/apple_employees_file_for_wide_touchpad_patent.html
And of course the keys are going to look large.. the laptop is so tiny.
So far all the comments about it being fake seem to be weak.
My problem is that the ratio of the trackpad does not seem to line up with the ratio of the screen.
FAKE!!!! Look at the shadows for one, and for two, Apple is a design king, they would never release something that disgustingly ugly.
>Apple is a design king, they would never release something that disgustingly ugly.
Why do every single products they released look like shit then?
And moreover, what would be the functional purpose to have a ggggggggiiiiiiiiiiaaaaaaaannnnnnnnntttttttt mouse button.. i get the touchpad being wide (ugly, but wide).. but the mouse button.. ick.
yay sweden!
I agree with Larry. The “shopped!” comments don’t hold a lot of water. I’m calling “legit” on this one.
Legit? You’re kidding right? The idiot who “shopped” this photo misinterpreted Apple’s description of the wide trackpad. The trackpad serves also as a “clickable surface” and if the design were to include a backup regular button, its width would only be a fraction of the trackpad (The trackpad can discern between accidental touch or palms resting on it, but the button is just a button)
Also, the relative thickness of the two laptops show that the right one is too thin. The guy went too far with thinning it. You can also see (may ned to zoom in) that the left edge of the laptop and the trackpad is clearly photoshopped and is a bit off.
Who cares. Apple will never produce anything to match the Asus Eee.
Well, this desk picture seems to have been taken in Sweden, hence the title of the book “Angels and Demons” is the swedish edition of this book.
Why on earth would an yet-unreleased Mac show up on a provate desk in Sweden?
Way to go Sherlock. If you see a chinese restaurant, do you think you’re in China then?
You’re not supposed to rest your wrists on a surface while typing anyway.
Unless your kink is carpel tunnel.
I love reading these comments!!
It looks like the inside of Apple to me. And the macbook looks correct. It’s real. Let’s see if this site has to take the photo off- then we’ll know for sure.
Photoshop. Fake. And, ask yourself, IF it was real and you got that close wouldn’t you have snapped multiple shots?
“You told us so” ?
Please.
That photo is fake. Why would the touchpad stretch out to the palm rests?
I say it’s real.
They have a patent on the wide touchpad:
http://blogs.zdnet.com/Apple/?p=774
Twin Wide track-pads:
http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/09/revenge-of-apple-patent-attack-giant-laptop-touchpad/
And the laptop design:
http://www.engadget.com/2006/03/02/apple-files-for-patent-on-wide-laptop-touchpad/
It looks an awful like a PS job…some of the shadows seem a bit wrong.
A headline like ‘we told you so’ followed by a first sentence that says you don’t know if it’s real or not is kinda duuuh. Can has less digg/techmeme bait kthxbye.
I’m calling BS, as well.
