D-Link intros wireless set-top box for PC-to-TV video streaming

We’re not sure yet exactly how this works, but D-Link is really getting into the PC-to-TV game with its new MediaLounge DPG-1200 system. It’s a wireless-enabled set-top box that streams your iTunes, YouTube, DVD, and other video content to your TV using a colorful included remote control.

As far as we can tell it basically acts as a simple monitor interface, either mirroring your comptuer’s monitor or extending it, depending on how it’s set up. It supports up to 30fps at 720p, so if it works like it says it does, it could really be a low-priced alternative to devices like the Apple TV.

  • Any word on pricing?

  • It probably works like TiVo’s media sharing feature (minus DVR functionality). Anyone with TiVo knows what I’m talking about. This D-Link device has more bite with the iTunes support (no DRM support on TiVo) and 720p output. Interesting indeed. TiVo runs Linux so I imagine this will as well.

  • This product is powered by Quartics PC2TV hardware, so I’m going to guess it’s as capable and useful as other solutions using the same technology. Never mind how it works, just enjoy the fact that it does. I have yet to come across a single file format my PC2TV has any trouble with.
