Make your own joke

Sony, riding on a high after Warner’s decision to exclusively back Blu-ray, has used CES to announce Platinum MusicPass download cards. The cards, which will be available here in the U.S. on January 15, will let music fans download “high-quality” MP3s; they do look to be free of DRM, as we found out last week, since they’re playable on iPods or another digital audio player. Most cards will retail for $12.99, which includes the album download as well as additional bonus material. Album art, photos and the like, I’d suspect.

The cards will be available in Best Buy, Target and Fred’s, a store I’ve never heard of.

The full artist/album list is as follows:

Alejandro Fernandez, Viento A Favor
Alicia Keys, As I Am
Avril Lavigne, The Best Damn Thing
Backstreet Boys, UnBreakable
Barry Manilow, The Greatest Songs of the Seventies
Bob Dylan, Dylan

  • If I gotta go to the store, then come home and download the songs – well, hell, might as well just buy the cd!

  • I can already go to a retail store and buy drm-free albums with album art, liner notes, and even a physical back-up. And usually for less than 13 bucks.

At least this way I can round out my Manilow collection…

  • These are just dumb – how hard is it to buy a real CD and rip it into MP3’s? (although that may be stealing according to the RIAA) That list of music offends me – Britany and Avril – like OMFG!!!!!

These will fail – people are smart enough to know a gimmick when they see one and somehow I don’t think many tech friendly folks will trust Sony after the rootkit diaster – who knows what comes attached to these MP3s.

Buy real CD’s for god’s sake!

  • This latest Spears masterpiece is aptly titled for her current current path.

Note: More douchery from the music business. I’m not going to go to the store to buy the album then download it.

  • thank god for torrents …
