CES could leave Las Vegas, pigs take to the air

NBC is posting that CES will leave Las Vegas, which is like saying the Pope will leave Rome.
Las Vegas’ 31st International Consumer Electronics Show could be one of its last, organizers said Monday, saying they believe they can get a cheaper deal elsewhere.
As I said before, CES is losing value as a venue for announcing technology. It is a trade fair where vendors and buyers meet to greet and eat assorted sweets. It’s in Las Vegas because the folks who run these companies love Vegas. Try running CES in Orlando or Madison and you’ll discover that the attendance will drop and the perceived value of the event will tank almost completely. I hate me some Las Vegas, but to put it anywhere else is just foolish.

I think you are completely wrong. CES will end up being split up along product and/or regional lines. Its just too big and unwieldy. I haven’t gone in the last several years because its too expensive for what you can achieve during that time period. And I am not on the only one - I personally know dozens of others who have stopped going. Attendees are getting screwed on food, lodging, and airfare. And leaving CES on a last day? You spend 6 hours at the airport just getting through the security line. Never again. Its only a matter of time now.

Tim, I agree but I think for the EXACT audience and exhibitor mix that is here, Las Vegas is the best location for a show like this. As we all know, there are trade shows around the world now that rival CES in reach and coverage. If you’re a CE manufacturer, though, this environment just works.

I doubt they will leave, but if we do let them get away it will be a huge mistake for Las Vegas.
The main problem is a lot of people are getting sick of the casinos jacking up the room rates during CES. Rooms that normally would run $200 a night are being jacked up to $400 - $500. I think the casinos are shooting themselves in the foot. Granted CES visitors don’t gamble as much as other tourists they still spend alot of money in this town which ends up helping the casinos in the long run.
