Look out Eee, a $399 tiny laptop from Everex is afoot

I found the VIA table last night, tucked way back in a corner and found out that Everex will begin selling an ultraportable Linux-based notebook similar to the one shown here. This one is from Packard Bell and runs XP — currently being sold in Europe — but the one we’ll be getting in the US within the next week or so will be manufactured by Everex and will run Linux. It’ll cost $399, too.

The processor is a VIA C7-M running at 1.2GHZ, there’s a gigabyte of RAM, a 30-gigabyte hard drive, almost four hours of battery life, 7-inch screen (not a touchscreen) and, get this, DVI out instead of 15-pin VGA out. I came back to this table three or four times throughout the night and I’m excited to see what Everex is able to do with it.

  • I really miss the ultra portable laptops like my old IBM Thinkpad that was 10 inch I think. For the majority of users all they need is a good word processor and internet access. I am glad to see more of these coming to market, although I would have preferred to see this one with SSD or some flash installed over an HD.

  • may be this is a noob question, but can anyone point out where the touchpad or the like is?

  • The Asus Eee PC is now selling in Canada at “The Source by Circuit City”…what the old “Radio Shack” stores in Canada were converted to. And they have a fairly big retail network. Base price is C$350.

Walmart (whom I hate and won’t shop there anyway) isn’t selling the Everex desktops in Canada…but Tiger Direct is…at C$257. If Tiger Direct is selling the Everex notebook in Canada when it comes out…the sales won’t be as great as for those of the Eee PC here…and probably slightly higher priced than in the U.S.

  • DVI = nice! But does it output 1080P? And what kind of video is the processor able to push? If it’s able to do DivX and such it could be a nice “HTPC” of sorts as well.

  • Portable or mobile means battery life and weight. 2 hours battery life is useless, it can serve just as UPS to protect against brown outs.
