Folks are missing the whole point with this Apple product. This mac is ULTRAPORTABLE. It was designed specifically for that, not editing video, music and doing most of the heavy things you would do on mac pros or the more powerful machines. It is not to be compared with that. This is for the traveler that just needs email, get on a wireless network, and do some simple tasks, not trying to create a new universe. A person who wants to travel light, and i mean light. If you have a 25G USB drive, then you will not even need an optical drive most of the time, maybe for installing applications but these days you can pull most of them online. for the LIGHT traveler who only does word docs, rely heavily on email, and some other simple tasks and doesn't want to carry a kitchen and refrigerator, then this is perfect. I own a MacBook Air, and it has been great.

If the Air is only for basic procedures (listening to music, watching movies, word processing), then why on earth does it need such a powerful processor (for what it is)?

$1000.00 of the price of any Mac is for shipping it out of China. Cult leader Steve Jobs outsources the building of Mac laptops to the Chinese in Shanghai, thus taking jobs away from Americans, and making us pay the freight. I worked for Apple for a year and 3 months, and quit. I could not stand the arrogance.

Am i right? You try to say that we, "idiots", don't know that WINDOWS MOBILE SMARTPHONES are enough for everything that MACBOOK AIR can do.
I assume that these smartphones should be smarter than you.

Open your eyes, its not a subnotebook yes but its thinner and much powerful than all other subnotebooks (11"-12") and weighs just 1.3kg. Also MBA has an ideal 13.3" screen and it is quite and solid. Its not like others, its not an all-in-1 package. People like me don't need an optical drive, card reader or ethernet port ON THE ROAD. For me just weight, design, thickness and OPERATING SYSTEM is important. I also prefer latest technologies like HD Videos or Wireless Connectivity (USB - Printers - EXternal HDD DVD)
So MBA is perfect for me. And its cheaper than Sony Vaio TZ which i also like very much.

Altough there should be some possible problems like heating or low HDD performance.

To be sure, we have to wait and learn.

In all my years working with technology and travelling on planes I have NEVER met anyone with your unique work profile - no etherenet? no optical drive? If Apple is aiming at the market your represent, I guess they got it right.

I'd be too afraid of bending this exquisite, costly slice of technology in a backpack, briefcase or suitcase and I'd be pissed at the cracked screen.

It is a thing of beauty and no one can deny that.

Great article! I love all the comments defending this atrocity also -- especially the guys that think it's for the traveler that doesn't need to do anything other than read email or do presentations. I assume that these idiots have never heard of Smartphones or BlackBerrys.

"Other subnotebooks — a category generally defined as weighing three pounds or less — have screens of just 10 to 12 inches and compressed keyboards. The three-pound MacBook Air, by contrast, features a 13.3-inch display and a full-size keyboard." - Walt Mossberg WSJ

Hmm... not a sub-notebook, ehh?

At last i know there are a group of poeople using their notebooks like me:))

But maybe these kind of articles could help us to buy macbook air for 1599$ or for 1799$ but with 160GB (new ipods 1.8" drives)
Yes THIS would be helpful :)

The articles and posts that i found most funny are about Asus Eepc vs. Apple Macbook Air :)) what a comparison ?!

I'm dont hate microsoft or windows but its just for people whose needs and expectations are different. I can say macbook air is one of the most "apple thing" i've seen in last few years... its different its revolutionary its beautiful and a piece of art-technology.

I just aggree that its a little bit pricy. But if you compare with TZ or R500 you will see it's not so pricy.
And i hope there wont be an hdd performance or cpu heating problems.

Last thing to say;
"Leopard" is intalled in these papery notebook and its unique now

Dave, you are truly a loser. I own 5 computers; I can place the disk on any one of them. I would do so before I left home. I have wireless; in fact, I have not used an ethernet cable in over 3 years. I would suggest you stick with windows and their service packs.

students, man, not photoshop haxors with 400mb psds. STUDENTS.

I can't remember the last time I put anything in my optical drive or the last time I plugged in an ethernet cable. I can barely remember the last time I plugged something into my laptop besides a usb key!

your article makes valid points, but your key argument should more likely be 'this laptop is no good _for me_', becuase it's certainly just plain awesome for lots of people like me.

For the people who say that the Macbook Air is mainly for blogging, surfing the internet, wording processing and even watching movies, you may want to reconsider. It was 2GB of RAM, which for all those things is completely unneccesary, as even my four year old laptop with 512MB of RAM can do all those with ease. My laptop also has Intel Pentium 4, while the Air has Intel Core Duo. So, saying that it only really for the basic is a load of rubbish, as if it was, not as much power would be needed.
Only having once USB port is a negative. There are many items which are far better off being connected by USB and some of them would be cumbersome if they were linked wirelessly, a prime example being USB pendrives. To be honest, I don't want to have to charge everything, just so that it can link wirelessly, as it decreases the reliability that an item will work when I want it to.
For what the Air is, maybe it should have an optical drive, as there are many things that still use CDs and DVDs, as they are in general more reliable and safer than drives.
Another factor that makes the Air not a sublaptop, is the lack of a solid state drive as standard (another £500 for one to be more precise). the benefit of SSDs is that they can suffer more wear and tear, which is what many portable devices experience.
The lack of a built in card reader as standard greatly hampers the Air, as SD cards and es[ecially SDHC cards are ever increasing in capacity (12GB annonced at CES by Sandisk this year). This expandable memory is very useful.
The lack of a replacable battery is also annoying. The battery in machines of the Air's size have very small batteries and it is easy to carry a spare due to thier size.
There are quite a few other problems with the Air I do not have to to divulge into.
Overall the Air is a computer which is between a small laptop and a sublaptop and to be honest there is barely a market for such a thing. The only things that I see that will make the AIr sell well are the looks and the appeal to Apple enthusiasts.
For its price, the Air is not really worth the money it costs and there are several better and far cheaper alternatives (you could by an aternative and a full laptop for the same price as an Air).
