Macword 2008: MacBook Air image gallery, redux

The good people at Apple were wise enough to let me have a few moments with their new MacBook Air, and I fell in love. I took these revealing photos that point to a couple of things we hadn’t heard about, like the 2GB standard RAM is 2, 1GB sticks. And if you look closely, you can see some of my drool.

Our gallery software’s not working due to our crappy hotel Internet connection, so I’d recommend hitting up the rest of this post with broadband.

What are you taking photos with, a camera phone?

I find it rather attractive but once I found out about the price, my top of the line HP laptop suddenly became even more so ;-) This is a very niche product, in a few years, this will be standard but until the price goes down, I will stick with my 10lbs laptop.

So it has 2 1GB sticks of RAM, but what is the max RAM allowed. Currently it seems like most Macs max out a 2GB, 1GB in each slot. So does the Air allow for 4GB, 8GB total?!

While I love the idea of this computer, I’ll wait for a second- or third-generation product. Oh, just to answer a question: the memory is onboard and thus NOT upgradeable. But I think 2 GB of memory is pretty good for Apple’s first time out with a thin laptop. I think they do have some pretty cool innovations here, particularly the amount of processor speed that goes into a laptop that is THIS thin. It’s awesome, compared to others that are even THICKER. The recessed ports worry me a little, mostly because I worry that it would be hard to plug things in because the thing would move as you tried, wouldn’t it? Also, they could stand to have a few more features, EVEN THOUGH it’s pretty much an all-wireless machine. Like FireWire. Video cameras, and a lot of other products still use FireWire; and Apple invented it, anyway! But yeah. I like the design, overall. I like the keyboard (that it’s like the MacBook BUT has backlighting w/ ambiance) and, of course, the trackpad. I also like the ability to use another computer’s optical drive; it doesn’t bother me that the computer doesn’t have one, as that is how these computers are supposed to be. Perhaps eventually, they’ll be able to put them in. But not right now. And I’m fine with that. But back to my original point: this was a great first product, but they can do MUCH better, and I’m sure they will, sometime in the next few years. I can’t wait to see how this all plays out. I hope it’s a (moderate, at least) success.

We all know that the MacBook Air is sleek and beautiful, the question is - how does it perform as a machine. I really doubt the performance would match any of the ‘thick’ counterparts in the market.

But after all, it is a Mac :D.
