I made the mistake of paying $4.99 to see this OnDemand...I stopped watching after the first 30 minutes due to NAUSEA! The whole idea of shooting the whole friggin thing from a shaky camcorder was not a novel idea....it was sloppy, stupid, juvenile, and I've seen YouTube videos shot by high school kids that looked better. J.J. Abrams, when people go to the movies, they want to see an actual movie production, and NOT an amateur camcorder gimmick!

Meh. We just rented the movie tonight. Like a couple of others, I googled "Cloverfield sucks," and got sent here. I couldn't agree more. The thing that sucks the most about this movie (and there's plenty of suck, believe me,) is what it coulda/woulda/shoulda been. Instead, we got Blair Witch with a bigger CGI budget. Thank god we only rented it. . .

There were numerous things about Cloverfield that I didn't like and here are a few: 1. Excessive camera shaking- if you've seen the move I don't need to go in depth. They were trying to create suspense and get people's adreniline pumping, but it suceeded in macking my head hurt and stomch churn. 2. in the scene where they were in the slanting building and Rob is kicking the door in- he is standing up just fine, and the girl Lilly is all on the ground lunging like the slant of the building and gravity is preventing her from moving foreword- bad acting it was obvious that the floor was not on a tilt, just the camera. 3. Where were the people fleeing in cars?? I looked for it the whole movie, other than tanks- there were no moving vehicles on what seemed to be deserted clear streets. I would imagine if it were a real disaster the roads would be jammed packed with people trying to get out in vehicles, I saw not a one. 4. Guy holding the camera was annoying, a bad actor, and unrealistic- so because the camera was shaking so much, I'm guessing he was holding it the whole time, and if so there were a lot of scenes his video tapping people would be unrealistic. 5. The ending- very poorly done. I understand the "movie" we were watching was supposed to be the "actual videotape" from the camcorder, and they couldn't show point of views separate from the camera, but couldn't they have shown maybe someone in the future finding the camcorder and letting us know what happened- the whole everyone's dead so there's no one to tell us what happened ending was unfinished. At least I can be happy that I waited, and rented it instead of shelling out for the theatre. In hindsight I wished I would have picked up 27 dresses instead.

I saw this movie 2 days ago and I still have a lingering headache. What I can say is this:

1) The acting was sub-par. I typically watch (and enjoy) movies that display actors at the top of their craft. The Deer Hunter is one of my favorites for this reason.

2) There was zero character development. I neither liked nor disliked the characters. The manner in which they were presented elicited as much of a response from me as cardboard cutouts marched around the set would have done.

3) The story (if one can call it that) is devoid of any of the elements that make a good story. There's nothing to be learned here. There's nothing to take away from this story that leads one to think about questions that were raised. It's akin to setting a camera up outside of a restaurant where you know a natural gas pipe is going to blow up and then filming a group of people who had volunteered to be filmed in the midst of a natural gas explosion.

4) The camera shake is vomit inducing and brings absolutely nothing to the movie (this most certainly is *not* a film) except a strong urge to flee from it.

5) Believability. Others have commented that we are to suspend disbelief when watching something of this genre and therefore any criticism about this movie's believability is unwarranted. But here's where that reasoning is flawed: the movie, by its shooting style and the 'acting' sets itself up as documenting what 'real people' would do in such a fantastic situation, therefore, they don't get a free pass in the believability arena. Others have pointed out the glaring flaws already, so I will just say this: the flaws and gaps in the believability of the characters are so enormous as to be laughable, and are not so only because one is stifling the urge to vomit from the camera shake induced vertigo.

Run, don't walk away from Cloverfield.

I agree with you Luke. But it could have been said a little better without the vulger language and still gotten the point across. Number one it was horrible directing, lack of story line, not to mention there were many location mistakes that made the realism obsolete. Yes folks this movie was awful! Don't waste your money.

I saw it, i liked the characters, it has a good story, almost vomit with the camera effect, but the end is so AHHHHHHHHHH live or die whats up with that, i just saw 90 minutes of a movie to know if the monster lives or die, if the characters lives or die, and at the end i just see rocks and a flashback, cmon they leave space for a second part, so after u watch this one, would u see the second one with the danger of another shitty ending or u would stay await of that shit???? see it at ur own risk, idk why so many good reviews all lies...

Haven't been this disappointed since Alien3!

Went out today with my girlfriend who also wanted to see Cloverfield. Missing our opportunity back in January, our local 1.50 theatre still had it paying so we decided to take a chance.

Ahhh Cloverfield, how I hate thee...let me count the ways!

1) Boring....Ok, so we were a little late for the 3:15 showing, we were (ahem) busy..showed up at 3:40pm. Granted, trailers take anywhere from 5 to 10minutes but that still leaves 20minutes of nothing. Neither of us had ever seen a movie where we missed the first 20min of it and concluded that we "didn't miss anything".

2) Character Development or lack thereof. At no time during the movie did we ever feel "connected" or "attached" to the characters. Just not convincing, especially with Rob running all over the place doing things and not telling his friends what he is thinking. He just starts to take off and they follow aimlessly. At any given time they all could of been wiped out and we wouldn't of noticed nor cared.

3) The cameraman! Now, unlike everyone else my we didn't all that much mind the First Person Perspective technique. Nor did we get motion sick, annoyed yes, sick no. We understood what they were doing and why they were doing it, but felt that somehow they failed. Felt unconvincing, why...we have no idea...it just didn't. The other thing we noticed and drove us crazy was....

"WHEN A MONSTER COMES YOUR WAY, WHY ARE YOU NOT PAYING ATTENTION TO THE FREAKIN MONSTER?!"

Referring to what an earlier user wrote about the one building leaning against the other, they can see the monster closing in and Hudson only glances breifly. But that isn't the only time, several times he choses to look at his friends and NOT watch where the monster is. In a survival situation, you can bet your ass I'll be watching my enemy so I can react accordingly. The monster & mini me monsters seem like an afterthought to them? After being attacked in the subway by those mini-me's you would of thought they would be more meticulous about how to proceed forward and defend themselves.

4) The Ending....all we could say was....WTF? Rachel and I just sat there and looked at each other with the most dumbfounded expressions. So for a minute or 2 we sat to see if there was going to be anything after the credits..some films do that. Then we thought about it and decided that we didn't give a shit about the characters anyway so we left.

You hear bombs go off, you see fire from the explosion, they get crushed by the bridge they were under, and it goes black. Thats it. Straight to credits!

We both were mezmerized by the trailers but just didn't get the chance to see it when it came out. We're glad we only wasted $3...at least the additional 10 i spent on our snacks wasn't a disappointment. Hmmm..movie popcorn.

We gave it a 3 out of 10.... This movie is just sad.

PS... if the people on Youtube make up the majority of america its no wonder why we elected Bush as president for 2 terms. Are these people serious? They loved this movie? *Lowers and shakes head....

I was MADE to watch that with a bunch of mates who were bigging it up, even though my mother who'd previously watched it (well, about half and hour of it) thought it was utter shit. She said she was bored to tears watching it, and I must say SO WAS I. It was the worst film I've ever watched, and quite possibly the worst film in existance. If not for the fact there were a few primal roars in there every so often, I'd have fallen asleep. I'm just glad it wasn't my money I wasted to watch it :l

Okay, so maybe the content of the film COULD happen. Which it could, I believe in aliens and all that crap, even if you don't. But if it did, don't you find it ironic that a little 'baby' creature like that would find itself destroying a main city?

Oh, and if I hear the word 'Rob' being repeated more than 6 times in one go again, I'm going to severely slap someone >:L

Luke must be a documentary fan and only a documentary fan. What a boring life. There is not a scifi movie out today that stands up to his "it must be so totally fucking real" criteria.

I really hated this movie. We went to a matinee and still felt ripped off. I get the steady cam thing, and I don't object to neither explaining or really showing the monster, but I don't like paying money for a movie and feeling like I've seen more interesting and creative things posted on youtube.

Movies can choose not to do certain things, but I think there is an implication that they should try to do something. This movie was boring. It was ENTIRELY predictable. The "characters" were not sympathetic or interesting, they were stupid, spoiled metrosexual children and as the film went on I only wanted them to die so that the film would be over. There was no plot and no subtext. There was nothing in the movie at all, except an ultimately pointless series of uninteresting scenes stitched together by the steady cam vehicle. Occasionally, things would explode and stuff, which was a welcome escape from the dialogue.

So bad was this movie, so vacant of thought, so lacking of depth or wit, that you could not possibly understand how bad it is until you see it. This isn't one of those bad movies that you see as guilty pleasure either. It's worse than that. After it's done, you just wish you had gone bowling or something. Anything else really.

I have come to a realization. Nothing that is said on this website will change anybodys opinion. The people who like Cloverfield, the few that there are, but there are some, are going to continue to like Cloverfield, while the people who hate Cloverfield, i.e. most people who have seen the movie, are going to continue hating it. No matter how many reasons people have for why the movie was good, or why it sucked, it will not change the views of either party. Maybe in a few years, or, more likely, decades, when you've sort of forgotten about the movie, and you finally watch it again, your opinion might change. But in the mean-time, everybody is firmly rooted in each camp, and very few will change there positions, if any. So, in closing, I would just like to say this will be my last post here, seeing as nothing will change anything. Cloverfield sucks (in my opinion)!

I had only read Paul's Saving Private Ryan post. By the time I had read his other one's, it was too late. Anyway, back to my irrefutable rebuttal. The NSA thing, or whatever it was at the beginning, is just stupid. If they want it to seem like it had actually happened, then they wouldn't put that at the beginning, since if the film was that classified, it would not appear at theatres, thus getting rid of realism. That sort of takes away from the all important authenticity that you mentioned. Your also tearing my argument to shreds in incoherent ways. Why would you bother saying that your sorry if people thought the movie was real? That shows that your grabbing at straws. Also, since it seems that your one real response to posts is that we "missed your point entirely". If people miss your point entirely so often, then maybe it's your fault for not writing it in a way that was easy to understand? I'm just glad that I won't get offended by this thing being called the American Monster Movie. I'm Canadian. In closing, I would just like to say that I respect your opinion, and your right to have it, but please give good reasons for having them.

P.S. Thank you for complimenting me on my vocabulary. You also have a good vocabulary yourself, and you are good at writing these things. It's getting harder and harder to make a rebuttal. I have a feeling this may go on for a while.

What? What the hell are you talking about? I just said they should have made it like a normal movie, and had some suspense leading up to the monster attack. They could still have had Hud holding the camera, and occasionally switching to its view, but the majority of the movie should have been shot the normal way. I also never mentioned making like the almost as crappy War of the Worlds (the new one, not the old one). All that I'm saying is that this movie had the potential to be good, but the film makers screwed up, and it wasn't good.

P.S. Don't insult Morgan Freeman by mentioning him and Cloverfield in the same paragraph. He deserves better than that.
