This is hard to think, and even harder to say, but if the editor of Next-Generation says it, I’m inclined to believe it: the PlayStation 3 will be the ultimate winner of this generation. And, like in an academic paper, the author actually defines what “winning” means (and what it doesn’t mean).
First, “winning” isn’t what it used to be: no one console will be an unmistakable dominant force; no one console will “fail.” Rather, with this generation, all the players (Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo) will go home with some sort of prize. Nintendo will have “won” in opening up the video game market to a whole different group of people, for example. Microsoft may end up making some money off its Xbox Live Marketplace. And Sony has Blu-ray.

Right now, Blu-ray on the PS3 is irrelevant. Early adopters are the only ones interested in upgrading their, for everyone else, “good enough” DVD collection. High-def is still a luxury to most people. But as these holdouts upgrade their TVs and DVD players, they’ll look closely at the PS3. A Blu-ray player from a brand I trust that just so happens to play games too? Sign me up!
That’s the idea, at least.
There’s a few other things working for the PS3. Its game library this year looks to be better than last year’s, with the likes of Metal Gear and Little Big World appealing to the hardcore and mallcore, respectively. (I really just wanted to use the word “mallcore in a post here.) PlayStation Home might actually take off, or at least it deserves to take off.
Look for the PS3 to not suck nearly as much as it has these past few years. That much is certain.

The PS3 has a long way to go in the games department… I don’t blame anyone for holding out on buying one until there are more than a couple of decent games for it.

Well for a start its only been on sales in Japan and the US for 13 months and in Pal regions for just 9 months. In what way is it actually ’sucking’ anyway? Last year it only sold 700k less than the 360 worldwide and its currently outselling the 360 so far in 2008 so you certainly cant think its sucking in sales. It has had games delayed but has still had fantastic multi-platform titles and exclsuives like Ratchet & Clank, Warhawk, Uncharted, Motorstorm and Resistance.

I dont know if it will effect the outcome of the console war because i beleive that nintendo is outselling the Ps3 by a couple million. I dont like bluray much id rather have hd dvd instead. but the blu ray might have little impact. Also the xbox 360 has been out longer than the PS3 and the xbox 360 outsold the PS3 in the ps3’s first year.

blu-ray has been adopted by the majority of hollywood studios, and it is outselling hd-dvd by about 5-1, also blu-ray has far more potential for storage capacity, up to 200Gig per disc (a reliable source at sony)

according to vgchartz, the Wii has 20 mil sales WW and the PS3 has 9.2 mil sales. Also, the figures you mentioned for the PS3 was Sony’s announcement at the end of June. Do you honestly think that they’ve sold NO PS3s since June? I’m not even going to comment on the Wii’s sales (1.7 million in the week before Christmas…)

I’ve been holding out on picking a system. I think the ps3 has potential, I played the crap out of ps1 and ps2 so I guess I’m partial to the Playstation brand, but I’m glad to see Nintendo make a comeback as well. Xbox has an established game library and the online play seems pretty seamless, sucks that you have to pay though. Right now i’m leaning to the ps3. I think the firmware updates, possible DVR Upgrade, Home, and just the openess of the Ps3 makes it attractive, gonna wait for another price cut though.
Ok wow still no one talks about the actual benefit of blu ray.. XBOX still develops games on STANDARD DVD.. while sony develops on Blu RAY.. which has what 3x 4x the room.. which means better graphics longer games and more content.. I mean just look at what a game developed just for the ps3 can look.. aka UNCHARTED which is by far the best looking game on the market.. once 3rd parties stop being god damn lazy cough EA cough then ps3 games will make xbox games look like ps2 games.. Blu ray is more than just movies.. it will give developers the room to make amazing game and with the processing power of the ps3, which devs said they are only using 20% OF THAT POWER.. games will be rediculoously great
Its not just that, after sony’s marketing drive (the one with the trucks n all) 87% of ps3 owners are aware of the fact that their ps3’s play blu rays. hence you can call almost every ps3 in the market a blu ray player as well (it IS already, people didnt know aobut it, so you couldnt really consider it in the race)

Wow one good month in sales and the fanboys lose a total grip on reality… Wake up you idiots, Sony dropped the price on the ps3 twice last year and redeveloped the console for the cheaper market. They had no games and the only people buying the console where boys who get their jollies off in front of it.
I just ordered my PS3 cuz the price is sweet, I am going to load Linux on it and some apps that will test the Cell CPU to its limits. The only game I look forward to is GT5 and the Blu-rays are starting to come out in my local blockbuster.
My Xbox has far better games and online experience and I wont buy a Wii as I have no need to swing a remote around my lounge…. That is what the parks and beach is for.

I was an early adopter of ps3. I bought it simply because metal gear 4. ONLY reason. I have a 60 gig model with complete backwards compatibility(which the games look better being played on there) plus more usb ports etc. etc. etc.

Playstation 3 will in the end win the console race since it basically has a future. Xbox 360 has been already used to its max potential with Gears Of War, heck after that game I only saw games got worse on xbox 360. Halo 3 doesn’t look that good and Mass Effect doesn’t look that good either. People have only tapped into 30% of the ps3’s power, which means there’s a still somewhat more to go. Dualshock 3 is coming, there will be more price drops, and better software will be coming. Also the developers are getting devkits to use ps3 to the best. It will end up doing pretty well.

I have sold 12 ps3’s this week at my gamestop store and swapped out to defective 360’s. sold zero 360’s. Sold all 11 wii’s that came in. I am out of used 60 gigs, 20 gigs, new 40 gigs, and have only 2 80’s in stock now. I think this is a premonition! Theres too much BS here. PS3 has a tun of great games – even from launch. ITs typical ignorance not to have a look at the selection and try some of these games out. Sounds like a MS fanboy rant, when ppl say “theres no good PS3 games”.. pathetic. In truth, it should be more said for the Wii. Since in terms of truly _good_ games, the Wii is _very_ limited. Additionally, most games feel like you are playing a PS2.. so I think the Wii has a very limited audience. I think by the time the Wii has sold to all the Nintendo fanboys.. things will slow down for them. Remember.. Nintendo managed to sell 15 million gamecubes.. you could easily point out that the high majority of Wii buyers are ex-gamecube owners (I know this is true for most fo the ppl I know).
PS3 being more expensive, doesnt have the same sort of upgrade path. Mainly because the PS2 is still selling extremely well because its so cheap. Until the PS3 pushes the PS2 out of the market, there will be a minimal demand for the PS3. Once PS2 owners start upgrading then you have over 100 million possible owners looking at changing.. thats a substantial group of ppl in any terms.
With MS. They are simply in trouble. The X360 is costing the company over 1.1billion USD a quarter (mainly due to repairs and faults), and there is quite a dulling in market enthusiasm for a product that has such an unbeleivable failure rate – 30% failure for ANY electronics device is unheard of. This is something MS have to address quickly… but it appears they dont care – is this the sort of company you’d buy some hardware from? Fairly hard to justify even with some good games.. here and there. Additionally, MS suffer from PC-ness with their games. Too much focus on FPS and traditional PC gaming on console. They arent learning from Sony and Nintendo in terms of making more ‘E’ for ‘Everyone’ gaming… relying heavily on third party companies to provide it.
Finally.. thats what will essentially make the big difference between the three. The fact Sony owns many many more game development companies than MS and Nintendo combined, means they can build alot more platform unique titles for their hardware – this is what gave the PS2 huge benefits in the previous generation. For a long term marketing strategy.. this can only be more effective in providing a much wider gaming experience. IF you are limited only to a handful of companies, then you also limit your capacity to build a wide range of titles, and thus attract a wide audience.
2008.. will ultimately show what Im on about. Since many things will change throughout the year, to change peoples perceptions of platforms and gaming..
@ Jason and others, you really need to do your sums! First off you can not compare 360 “shipped to retail” (ie not customer) cumulative figures with some random sales figures for the PS3/Wii that look about 6 months out of date. Also, as much as MS would like to, you can’t ignore rest of World sales and only focus on US NPD data!
Now let’s take an intelligent look at sales using the relatively accurate VG Chartz data and compare it with months on sale:
360: 16.51M – on sale worldwide 27 months
- average per month = 611,000
PS3: 9.29M – on sale 15mths US/Jap, 11mths Other, average 12.5mths
- average per month = 743,000
Wii: 20.03M – on sale worldwide 15 months
- average per month = 1,333,000
When you factor in that the 360 had no next gen competition, not a bad range of launch games, and was relatively cheap. Then also factor in that the PS3 had intense competition, bad press, expensive launch price and few games in it’s first year. It makes the 360’s sales all the more embarrassing!
360 fanboys can stick their head in the sand all they want. But if you want to label a loser in console sales, then that label belongs on the 360…

The sony brand is huge not only that but they will do anything and I mean anything to make sure they win this console war, rumars of a other price cut already in works for ps3. As for Microsoft, their console aspirations are so great they already started selling or releasing the game studios they do own, and does not seem to be expanding their in house game development either. And given the that third party exclusive are rapidly heading the way of the dinosours this is their biggest mistake so far. Also major problem is the fact that RROD as prevented many poeple buying the console, I was in the electronic store could not help laugh when someone ask if it was a reliable, it a peice shit hardware, and it probably only matter of time before xboxlive will be hack if it has not already.
One prediction is that this console war is between sony and Nintendo, sony got a lot of catching up to do on their console, while nintendo needs to somehow increase support for third party games (aka get people to actually start buying them)or they will run into the same problems as they did last generation and lack of games appearing on the console will be it down full.
