Rumor: Canon to introduce mid-pro “3D” camera and 5D replacement?

canon-1ds-m3-side.jpg
Apparently some Canon reps technicians have loose lips and while jawing about how unpredictable their bosses were about announcing things, may have leaked a few specs for a phantom camera set to fit in between the 1D Mark III and the 5D. He also mentioned some possible upgrade specs for the 5D — maybe now is your chance to buy a used 5D on the cheap as all the pros ditch for the new freshness. The “3D” is rumored to have a smaller body but still a 15.1-megapixel full-frame sensor. And 12800 ISO? Yes please! See the rest of the shady specs after the link.

The rumored “3D” is to feature:

15.1 megapixels (full frame)
14 bit color
Digic III image processor
ISO 100 to 6400(up to 12800)
AF like 1Dmk III
3 fps [only?]
3 inch screen
A sort of smaller 1D body, with integrated grip but not rear lcd panel [not sure what this means]
1 flash card slot

The supposed 5D replacement:

12.8 megapixels
14 bit color
Digic III image processor
ISO 100 to 3200 (up to 6400)
Improved 9 point AF
4 fps
3 inch screen
Improved body

We’ll see how this pans out. Interesting to say the least.

  1. Actually this “RUMOR” is sourced from a Canon repair tech not from a Canon Rep. That being said it has as much validity as any of the other rumors floating around. Bottom line is we will know what Canon has in mind when the announce it and not really anytime before that.

  2. Oops, you’re totally right. Thanks for calling me out on that. I guess I took the “Rep” from “Repair.”

  3. Three frames per second would be a bad move. It’s going to have to be 4 or 5 fps for people to accept it.

And it seems we will only have to wait until tomorrow. Canon is supposed to announce something on the 24th.

    3FPS is okay for me.

Most of my work does not require high FPS. I guess high FPS is not important to most people anyway, I hardly ever use my current body on multi shot.

One of the things I am interested in is the high ISO (12800) but again, for most people this will never be used, I do band photography so this will suit me fine :)

All in all, if these are the 3D specs, I’m having one as soon as it comes out :)

  5. Oh, the reference to the LCD panel in relation to the integrated grip is with the 1Ds Mark II (which I use) and III and 1d Mark III, there’s a very small LCD on the lower part of the camera where you control things like white balance and other features. It’s separate from the main back LCD.

Shut the fuck up about all things PMA! This is a gadget blog, if I wanted to know every fucking camera being released at PMA, then I’d read a fucking camera blog!

  7. Hey, I would rather have a Sony because the colors are more candy like. I think the 5D will be replaced by the 1DS Mark III or they might bring out of retirement the 10D for it’s neato colors and artsy noise.

    Cheers
