It’s Jailbreak day here on CrunchGear, as another app has just been released, and it’s the easiest to use yet, as it’s an over the air updater for previously Jailbroken iPod Touches and iPhones, and the best part is you can do it without a computer at all.
If you’re iPhone or Touch isn’t jailbroken yet, this isn’t for you. But if you’re using a 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 Jailbroken handheld, this is the easiest yet. Using the installer.app you’ve already installed, you can now update your system software to 1.1.3.
A word of caution, not all current third-party apps work with 1.1.3, such as Summerboard, but it, as well as most others, should have compatible updates very soon. Hit the jump to get started.
In all, the update takes about 45 minutes, but it’s a painless 45 minutes that you can use to do other things, like read CrunchGear.
You’ll need a decent Wi-Fi connection for your iPhone or iPod Touch. The faster the connection, the faster it’ll upgrade.
To start, make sure that installer.app and the BSD subsystem are up to date. If they are, back out to the settings menu and make sure your autolock is disabled. Then, in installer.ap, simply add http://ijailbreak.com/repo.plist to the sources list in Installer (Sources -> Edit -> Add -> http://ijailbreak.com/repo.plist), then refresh your sources. Go back to the installable packages list and you should have a category called “iJailBreakMobile”. From there, choose the 1.1.1 installer or the 1.1.2 installer, based on which firmware you’re running. This will put a new icon on your device, called iJailbreak. Run it.
You’ll be asked to make sure a few things are set up, and if they are, it’ll start the download process. This part can take awhile, as it’s downloading the real 1.1.3 firmware from Apple.
Just let it run. At times, it’ll look like it’s giving an error or freezing, but it’s supposed to look like that. If successful, which it should be if you’ve followed our instructions, it’ll reboot into 1.1.3, ready to go. If not, you’ll reboot to wherever you were at before, so you can give it another go.
When it’s done, you’ll want to go to the installer app again and install “iPod Touch Software Upgrade” if you’re on a Touch, as I am. It’ll install a new program called iJailbreak that looks just like the last one. Hit it to reboot with all the new apps (Mail, Maps, etc.) and the “wiggly icon” arrangement thing.
When you’re all done, you’ll also want to run the app called “Remove 1.1.3 Upgrade Data” if you’re upgrading for 1.1.1, as the application is left on your device when it’s done, and it takes up space on your device that you’d love to have back.
You could thank me for showing you this, but the thanks should go to AriX of iJailBreak dot com, the mind who put this all together. Feel free to make a donation to the man if it works for you.

Hmm..So you lose all previous data?
That depends. I did, because I messed mine up. But it should be fairly painless for you.
I’m trying this right now. Thanks, Matt!
So – does this work with unlocked 1.11 phones? I am using T-Mobile right now.
I have the whole
“Finishing up… if you see a spinning cog and your device does not reboot automatically, you can reboot manually once the spinning cog appears, or if it takes more than 10 minutes from when this message appears.”
It’s been about 10, but I have no doubts. I can’t wait for this to work!
I am trying to download the 1.1.2 to 1.1.3 jailbreak and it keeps crashing once it starts installing it :(
I had that problem too. It has to do with software on your iPod/iPhone. I wiped all the third-party stuff off, then it worked just fine and dandy.
Hmmm, I cant seem to do this. my iPod touch 1.1.3 just shows a bunch of errors than says that process completed, is this normal? It doesnt even start to download the files.
If you’re already on 1.1.3, you don’t need to do this.
I meant 1.1.1 not 1.1.3
ok I unistalled it and reinstalled it but now it just says on the last line
“it is completely normal :)”
and it does nothing.
Same here, if you read carefully it seems there are some error messages as well in the command line.
Can any body help? i just did upgrade my iphone version 1.1.1 to 1.1.3 by air via every thing work but now it error out show itune logo and connector what can i do please help me…
I think you need to install the BSD Subsystem 2.0 Term Fix. I had the same problem at first and re-installed BSD 2.0 and the iJailbreak app. Ran it and it worked fine that time around.
did you get it to work….im getting the same error and dont know what to do…itunes tells me to restore and it cant seem to be able to do much more…also ibrickr 0.9.1 is telling me to restore using 1.0.2???
Thank you Matt Hickey! I deleted all of the iphone apps off of my ipod touch and it installed fine.
Help! I’m trying to install the iPod Touch apps, but it asks for a password! I don’t know what password it’s talking about!
Try Alpine. its the password given to your ipod when you jailbreak it
Will it have carried over from 1.1.2?
what the heck are you talking about?? the app store!?! if you mean ssh the default password is alpine, but if you dont even know how to put apps on your ipod with itunes, then jailbreaking is not for you
Now term-vt100 is also asking for a password! Does anyone think this is because of my lockup and having to manually restart to launch into 1.1.3? Any help is appreciated!
As i’ve said over and over again, I still suggest iPhone users not to tinker on their phone and leave it as it is. :)

Does this work on unlocked 1.1.1 iphones?
Does anyone else have the password problem? I can’t get anything to happen…
I am having the same problem with the password. Does anyone know what to type in there?
I think you should email AriX. They have a link at the website:
arix attlebat ijailbreak.com
I’ve emailed him, and the more that tell him the more likely we’ll get a response :-)
Have you tried ‘alpine’?
Yes. It doesnt let you type anything unless you press enter then it goes to Login where you can type but nothing works.
anyone from canada test if the “locate me” feature works?
A friend of mine showed me me how well it worked on his Touch, within 10 ft. of his driveway in a quiet residential neighbourhood of Victoria, BC.
Amazing yet also somewhat freaky that it worked far away so well in a non-commerical area. I’m really quite curious to see how they are collecting their data.
Still no luck with this upgrade path …. fingers crossed.
If you are having a problem with the iphone apps installer asking for a password check their website.
UPDATE: There are apparently some problems with installing iPhone apps if you are upgrading from 1.1.2, where the Terminal asks you for a password. A fix will be out tomorrow! By the way, if you’re getting syntax errors related to a smiley face, refresh your sources, then uninstall iJailBreak, reinstall, and start over :( Sorry for the inconvenience!
Thank you so much! That comment made my morning!
So, I have been working on upgrading my “iTOUCH” for the past 2 hours now and it appears that I have successfully upgraed from a JailBroken 1.1.2 iTOUCH to a 1.1.3 iTOUCH. I might add that I was able to install the new Software Apps as well. How did I get around the password issue? I wish I could say exactly but here is what I did.
I found the an article at the line below which gave these instructions:
If you’re a Windows user…
1. You must be on a PC connected to the same wireless network as your iPhone. Download these files and save them to your Desktop:
* PCSP for Windows (by the maker of PuTTY)
* PuTTY for Windows (SSH Client)
Now open a command window by going to your Start menu, clicking Run, and typing in ‘cmd’. Type the following commands:
1.) “cd desktop”
2.) “putty -ssh root@” with same replacement and password as above. When it asks for a password, type in “alpine” and press Enter (nothing will appear as your type in the password – this is normal).
I did this through the CMD window via PUTTY and it actually shutdown my iTOUCH and caused me to lose the connection as well. When it rebooted – to my surprise all of the new apps were installed. Now…I tried this directly in the iTOUCH as well as instructed in this post at the very top. It wouldn’t accept “alpine”. But when I did it through the putty session it worked.
Here is the post I found that may help. I didn’t perform the full jailbreak from PCSP as mentioned in the post at the link below. Up until the password issue I had followed the step by step instructions in this article above.
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=422278&highlight=jailbreak+password#Upgrading_and_jailbreaking_your_iPhone_in_1.1.3
Hope that helps.
okay so yea. Whenever i first saw this i was like yea right like this is really gonna work i just type in some stuff and magically they are all there but it did! Thanks for doing the great research and coming up with this it worked. I’m book marking this and adding this to my blog. This solved my problem with being sad that these great applications just cant be available on a jailbroken itouch!!!
Glad to hear it help someone…although this is an old / outdated post. Are you using an iPhone or iPod Touch? What firmware are you using? I recently upgraded my iPod Touch to 2.0 firmware using WINPWN (http://winpwn.com). You should check that out if you are just getting started with jailbreaking. Good luck!
If any is having a problem with the iphone apps installer asking for a password here is the news.

Now I can’t even download the ijb mobile app, maybe a server problem ?
I’m jealous for those of you who are now enjoying jiggly icons and “locate me” on Googlemaps.
After failing the first time, I now can’t even install iJBM 1.1.1, getting a “Package download failed” error.
Installing iJBM 1.1.2 is even funnier: “ERROR: This jailbreak only runs on 1.1.1, please use the 1.1.2 version if you’re running that”.
I guess you get what you pay for…. if this worked I would be singing the boyz praises for weeks.
I am getting the same error “Package download failed” when i run install iJailBreakMobile for the second error looks you are trying to install version 1.1.2 on an iphone that is running 1.1.1.
anyone had the same case “Package download failed”
Regards
try refreshing resources… I had the same “package download failed” error the first time I tried.
I’m so sorry to say but the jailbreak does not work with a 1.1.1 jailbroken Iphone I try several times and keep getting an ERROR massage that tells me that i need a 1.1.2 version for this patch to work. CAN ANY BODY HELP!!!!
if you have version 1.1.1 try to install version 1.1.1 to update to 1.1.3 don’t use version 1.1.2.
Good Luck
Not sure how you guys are getting locate me to work. It says this jailbreak method is based on NateTrue and his method defiitely does not have locate me working (unless you implement navizon hack). strange…
From ijailbreak.com:
“For those who are wondering, the 1.1.1 jailbreak is based on the Nate True method while the 1.1.2 jailbreak is based on the iPhone Dev Team method. As such, iJailBreakMobile is released under the GNU General Public License version 2.”
My friend upgraded from 1.1.2, hence the Skyhook connectivity.
Will I be able to use my TurboSIM on 1.1.3 after upgrading from a 1.1.2 jailbreaked iPhone!?
Hi Folks,
so in general, is it wise to use this method to update from a jailbroken 1.1.1 to 1.1.3?
Is the locate feature working or not? The update is multilingual, right?
the best way is to update from 1.1.2 to 1.1.3 – no matter which updater you use, and remove all third party apps before (you can leave BSD Subsystem and of course the installer app) there are too many things going wrong doing it directly from 1.1.1 (no working ringtones, no EDGE, no google locate etc.)
HEY PPL DOES IT GIVE AWAY THE APPS MAIL WEATHER ETC otherwise charged $20!
Ive a 1.1.1 with a 1.1.2 baseband….jailbroken, but I can;t call :(
Can I still use this and will this fix my problem also?
enrique, you could just run oktoprep via installer, that prepares your phone for 1.1.2. then you could update/rejailbreak it and have call functioning. then you could run this 1.1.3 update/jailbreak and it would be fine. problem with your phone is just that you are running 1 fw version behind the baseband. i figure all the apple updates from now on will be that way. might as well run the fw that is compatible with your modem baseband, otherwise you will never have call function.
i can’t install the application? it just goed back to the main screen when i’m installing it? can anybody help me?
Try uninstalling all of your 3rd party apps. Thats should stop the install from crashing.
Hello,to all !
My problem is so big and I don’t have so much hope. My iPhone was recenntly updated by mistake to firmware 1.1.3 with iTunes UPDATES. Before this update, my iPhone was working with any SIM I use, but now is locked. I tryed to downgrade it to another firmware version but is not working. I think, the bootloader was upgraded too. I have a patch circuit before this opeation attach to SIM , was a 3GPP, but from now does’t meather anymore.
I don’t know what was the previos versin of my firmware, I think it was 1.1.2, but I am not sure.
Can you help me somehow to unlock my iPhone ? The serial number (to provide details) of my iPhone is: 83750UJ1WH8 IMEI: 011365008018701. Thank you ! hope to find a solution :( .

downgrade the baseband to Alexanderr. if you dont do that, anysim wont work
downgrade the baseband too, alexanderr (excuse my english, hehe)

hope it helps
Owkay here is my problem:
1) downgraded ipod to 1.1.1 with itunes and configurated as new iPod
2) jailbreaked it with jailbreakme.com ….
3) updated installer
4) installed BSD subsystem
5) added ijailbreak.com\repo.plist to sources
6) installed iBreak
7) opening iBreak and then it goes wrong: it’s begin normally and then in a few seconds all of this comes on the screen:
….
/var/root/Media/1.1.3/upgrade.sh line 42:
/var/root/Media/1.1.3/ln: permission denied

Anyone a clue what’s going wrong or what i’m doing wrong? Anything i forgot to install in advance? … Thx
I’ve the excact same problem ):
Hí, I solved it. Just update to 1.1.2 via the OktoRep method, then it should work :)
the main problem seems to be that the firmare is not downloaded. I have the same problem and found that one of the first steps after you tapped the ibreak icon is the download that for some reason does not happen. The rest of the script counts on the firmaate to ve there so it fails if there is none.

The best way to cope with this is indeed upgrading from 111 to 112 (see http://www.iphoneatlas.com for a terrific guide) and then install 1.1.3 with the other (version 112) iJailBreak app.
Done it and it took me about 30 mins to go from 111 to 112 (including jailbreak and unlock). The iPhone has downloaded the OS image from Apple and is installing it at this moment. I’ll keep you posted!
Ard
I basically did what you outlined here, and got no good results. Lot’s of permission denied errors. I downgraded to 1.1.1 on my iPod Touch, and used JailBreakMe.com, updated Installer.app and installed BSD Subsystem then iJailBreak.
I’m basically going around in circles trying to figure this all out.
Hi
I did all on an iPhone. You downgraded tot 111, that’s OK. Now you need to upgrade to 112 using the guide at iphoneatlas. Then you can use iJailBreak for 112 and you are ready.
The iJailBreak vor 111 seems not to work for everyone. I have seem very few posts of the iJailbreak not working for 112.
i tried this method with my unlocked 1.1.1
only in my sceanrio my iphone goes in recovery mode after the update… :(
any1 a solution?
me too
Hi Alexander,i think you have to downgrade the baseband. Try with baseband downgrader in http://iunlock.no . You can downgrade the firmware, but if u dont downgrade the baseband anysim wont work
Great! This 1.1.3 update via the installer BRICKED my iPhone.
Boots, reboots, reboots, reboots, reboots again, and again and again. Until battery dead.
IT FUCKING BRICKED MINE TOO, IT’S DOING THE SAME THING! HOW DO I FIX IT?
Uggh…I managed to get the touch in recovery mode and restore the normal 1.1.3 firmware. I don’t feel like attempting the downgrade yet, but I don’t really care…the only apps I used were the ones that don’t work with the firmware anyway.
Sorry guys if the question is lame but… does this method upgrade the baseband too? I mean, my iphone is an 1.1.2 OTB with baseband 04.02.13_G. I’d like to have firmware 1.1.3 but I don’t want to upgrade my baseband, so I can take advantage of an evenutal unlock solution (should this happen…)
hello.
i am currently using unlocked (tmobile) 1.1.1 iphone
by doing this method, will i be still using tmobile and get same great feature from 1.1.3?
thank you in advance
Same thing here, I did the upgrade as advertised, everything ran fine, phone rebooted – into recovery mode !
The status before was a very well performing iPhone, bought in the US, used in Germany with Firmware 1.1.1 and SIMply (using the T-Mobile network)
What happened ? And why ?
Do I simply have to reinstall 1.1.1 and retry ?
Greetings,
Bernhard
Worked for me. I uninstalled all 3rd party apps except for BSD and other apps required to run. I manually re-started the iPhone before I ran the 1.1.2 jailbreak, as mine is a 1.1.2 jailbroken iPhone.
It updated just fine. I had to manually re-start as it was stuck on the final screen past 10 minutes. Everything seems to work so far except:
Most 3rd party apps – mostly games.
Faux GPS deal – Damn! This was the main reason why I tried this jailbreak. I live right outside of Boston so location is not an issue.
Everything else works so far. I didn’t have unique ringtones. Call me boring but I just like a good old phone ring.
Email works fine.
Google Maps works fine.
YouTube doesn’t connect – I think this has been an issue ever since the 1.1.2 jailbreak.
I wish someone would tell me how to fix these issues. As far as 3rd party apps, I have confidence that the developers will update their apps to work with 1.1.3. Otherwise I’m just going to have to go back to 1.1.2.
DO NOT USE THIS METHOD!! TOTALLY FAILS AND CAUSES NOTHING BUT GRIEF! I HAD LOST EVERYTHING AND HAD TO REVERT BACK TO 1.1.1
Everyone, I got all this working. If you can’t install the 1.1.3 programs add this source to the Installer.app:
http://ipod.iguy.dk
Choose “1.1.3 updatering” I know this is a Danish source, but it basically just activate the Januar update. And applications are in English (or whatever language you have)
Emailed AriX re: my problems and here was his response, which seems like good general advice:
“Try refreshing your sources, installing BSD Subsystem & iJailBreakMobile 1.1.1 again, and running it again. That should fix it up :)”
…. so far so good. Unfortunately I’ve had no luck in upgrading to 1.1.2 prior to this, so no Locate Me for me for the next little while.
Hi all,
I have started the installer from 1.1.1 after updating both BSD and Installer.app. The iPhone shows a unix commandline where several commands have been entered by the installer script. I see a lot of upgrade.sh line xx: /var/root/Media/1.1.3/something Permission denied.
It now shows a # at the command line and had stopped doing anything. Looking at the Ariport station, it also looks like it is not downloading anything (no Airport traffic). Is it supposed to do this? This situation has been so for half an hour.
Thanks.
Ard
It did the same to me. Enjoy my experience (after 5 restores :P):
1. You need a 1.1.1 jailbreaked iPhone / touch.
2. Update it to 1.1.2 via the OktoRep method (if you don’t know, search)
3. When that’s done, add the source from this site, and install the 1.1.3 package (be sure to choose the 1.1.2 version)
4. After 30-40 min (depending on internet speed) it will restart and you have a jailbreaked 1.1.3 device
5. I know you have a iPhone, but for others: Add http://ipod.iguy.dk/ and choose “1.1.3 updatering” (don’t worry about the complicated Danish language :P)
Alright, it works fine, but I can’t get the iJailbreak icon to go away! Does anyone know how?
Thanks,
I will try that later today. I’ll post my results.
Ard
I had a problem last night & couldn’t get it to work.
Reinstalled it today, and it seems to have done the trick.
I’m showing 1.1.3 (4A93) now! Woot!
WARNING WARNING WARNING – this method will NOT allow you to play DRM tunes that you bought through the iTunes store!!!
Note also, that (at least for me), it required a few attempts before it worked, even after starting with a fresh 1.1.1 system installed.
I’m going back to 1.1.1 where I should have stayed.
I wish the article had mentioned this rather large flaw in the jailbreak before I wasted a few hours of my time!
Let’s say it together once more:
ijb mobile 1.1.1 uses the Nate True method, and thus will create more problems than
ijb mobile 1.1.2, which uses the iPhone Dev team.
So, if your worried about your DRM, future SDK apps etc. Update first to 1.1.2 and then use ijbm 1.1.2 to launch you into 1.1.3 jiggly icon land.
panamajack – Thanks & sorry about that – I searched this page’s comments for ‘DRM’ and it didn’t seem that anybody had mentioned this before. I (like probably many others) wasn’t aware that the different methods had different repercussions – such as no DRM tracks when going from 1.1.1 – why would ANYONE want that?
At least I’m clear on this now. I’ve moved up to 1.1.2, so I’ll give this another shot tomorrow.
Quick question to those who have successfully used this – will this method simply overwrite the system files and leave my content untouched or do I need to sync my iPod touch again with my mac before I can enjoy them? I’m currently abroad and don’t have access to my computer. I’d like to try the upgrade but don’t want to lose my content in the process…
Thanks,
Super
So…after using this method, will the Faux-GPS work in Google Maps, or not? It seems like this question keeps getting glossed over. I guessed “no”, because the baseband isn’t upgraded, but confirmation from someone more knowledgeable would be nice.
Also, if you don’t mind a non-automated version, this guide details how to upgrade to a jailbroken 1.1.3 and still retain full functionality:
http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=25577
Look at my experience a few posts above. It does not update enough to allow you to use the faux-GPS. One more thing I noticed was that YouTube doesn’t connect. This was happening before in the 1.1.2 update so no surprise here.
I’m going to wait until after work and try to restore this back to 1.1.1 and then follow the long and complex way to get the bootloader updated so I can use the faux-GPS. But then again, I might just stop at 1.1.2 since many of the apps that I liked are no longer working in this 1.1.3 version.
As for Super’s question, it does keep all of the data (contacts, calendar, etc) after it upgrades. Now, keep in mind, I purposely uninstalled all of my 3rd party apps, except for BSD, before I ran the upgrade. I did this because I was burned by the Leopard upgrade a few weeks ago when I left some startup APE programs in my Tiger install before I upgraded to Leopard. Just a precautionary step.
Success ! Updated from 1.1.1 to 1.1.3 finally, and all the iPhones work great, including Locate Me … which has me in my office on campus within 10 ft.
I tried to install 1.1.3 on AT&T 1.1.1 jail broken iphone. Where all applications were uninstalled except BSD, Installer and Community Sources. Little after applying Patch11b.zip, iphone rebooted and stuck at showing iTunes and Dock connector picture, suggesting that iphone is in recovery mode. I am right now restoring iPhone to 1.1.1. Any suggestions?
I have exactly the same problem as you.
Same phone, same Itunes and dock connector picture.
Have you found the solution to it?
Raymond
This worked without any problems for me. I was on 1.1.1, i simply updated my BSD and community sources, removed all my 1.1.1 apps and ran the installer. No problems at all.
Just me who cant get the source to work?
no its not working right now
yeah the sites not working why? I don’t know
