AT&T got the okay by the FCC to purchase 12MHz-worth of the 700MHz wireless spectrum owned by Aloha Spectrum Holdings (covered here in October) for $2.5 billion.
This slice “covers 196 million of the 303 million U.S. residents and includes 72 of the top 100 media markets in the country,” according to IDG News Service. AT&T plans to use the spectrum for a combination of video, voice, and data transmissions. The slice purchased was not part of the current FCC auction.

AT&T hasn’t announced much beyond using it for high-speed data and voice transmissions but according to the source article…
“The 700MHz spectrum band carries wireless signals three to four times farther than some higher spectrum bands, making it optimal for long-range broadband networks.”
…so we might see some sort of new wireless data plans or maybe wireless TV broadcasting.
