This just in: HD DVD is in trouble, much to the chagrin of our own intrepid HD DVD-lover Devin Coldewey. According to a Reuters report, Netflix said that it’ll be offering Blu-ray DVDs exclusively.
It’s been divvying up both Blu-ray and HD DVD discs but will stop purchasing HD DVD movies today and phase out its inventory by the end of the year.

So when can I start buying their used HD-DVD discs?

I love how these companies like my making my consumer choices for me. Looks like I will be canceling my NetFlix account.

I kind of thought the same thing, Tony K. It’s a giant warehouse. Why not just stock the HD DVD discs for the hell of it? If the format truly dies, Netflix will run out of copies anyway. No need to pull the plug prematurely. Might as well give people options while options remain.

Yeah, what I really didn’t like is that Netflix is “citing signal from industy” that Blu Ray has won the format war, when in fact it hasn’t. Are the chips stacked against HD DVD, absolutely.
Sony is notorious for creating failed formats and I will not support a Sony format. I will also not support Blu Ray because of how they rushed it to market. Now all early adopters have to buy new Blu Ray players to take advantage of Profile 2.0. That’s screwing with your customers.
Netflix is doing this because four of the six major studios back Blu Ray. That’s a majority, not a win. Just keep watching the HD DVD exclusive discs that will be coming in the next six months.
“The prolonged period of competition between two formats has prevented clear communication to the consumer regarding the richness of the high-def experience versus standard definition,” said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer for Netflix. - That is the biggest load of garbage I have ever heard about HD.
Netflix is obviously full of garbage. I wouldn’t be surprised if Sony paid them to drop HD DVD. Either way, Netflix is a company that is trying to make a choice for me and they don’t deserve my money.

Sony is buying this win with an inferior security ridden product and an enormous pocket book. How many formats does this company have to produce and then stop backing before people learn? How many times do these Bozo’s have to screw their customer base before someone says enough? Bluray sucks every other disc refuses to play because you need another update to your player and that’s IF you have a player you can update. Forget it. Wake me up when this fails and another format comes out.

Wow, You guys really need some cheese with this whine.
This is great news for Netflix. Why do you think, a company should have to pay for and stock 2 different kinds of media, (blue ray/hd dvd) for the same product?
As history has shown us, VHS had a long run after defeating beta-max, so will Blue-ray.
I wonder how many people still have a betamax?
