DreamWorks still not giving up on HD DVD

Either DreamWorks is stupid or there are some things going on behind closed doors that no one knows about because there’s really no other explanation as to why they’re still clinging to HD DVD.

“We have a partnership with Toshiba and have an obligation to see this through,” DreamWorks Chief Executive Jeffrey Katzenberg said on Tuesday.

“As you know, we have been well-compensated for our support. It really is in their court at this point to really declare what the next step will be. We’re poised either way to jump into the marketplace when the conditions are right to do so,” he said.

Loyalty is a hard thing to come by these days any way you cut it, but this seems rather ridiculous. Toshiba dropped out, Katzenberg. They don’t give a heap load of dung what you do with “Bee Movie”, either. But then again, digital downloads are more than likely going to put Blu-ray to bed so maybe Katzenberg is onto something.

They may be contractually obligated to the format as a result of a prior payment, and it may not have a clause that releases Dreamworks upon the death of the format. Thus, it would be up to Toshiba to release them from their contractual obligations…

You really don’t see that Peter?

Of course I do. But I’m sure they have a clause that says if everyone else ditches and/or Toshiba ditches then they have the option to switch as well. Am I right?

That’s would probably be a fair assumption, but their actions above seem to point otherwise. To assume it would be conjecture, and thus it wouldn’t be fair to condemn their actions right now without knowing the full story. When they deferred the decision to them, but stating the ball was in their court, that’s exactly what it seems to indicate.

I agree that legal digital downloading is getting bigger and better…but I’m not going to be downloading a 20GB+ High Def movie. I’d much rather pay for the disc and watch it instantly instead of waiting 3+ days for it to download.

Super classy how you ripped off that image from iStockPhoto. Seeing as the watermark is there I’m assuming you guys are too cheap to even pay for an image huh?

Super classy how your comment is unrelated.

You suck. Who cares where a picture came from? It’s not like it is even related to the story anyways. Go eat a bag of dicks.

I’m sure the person who created it and uploaded it trying to make a buck cares. Too bad even though this blog is so loaded with ads, they can’t afford to pay someone for their work.

Now if you’ll excuse me I’ve got a bag of 2″ dicks (like Brad’s) to eat.

I happen to agree with Bittermormon, this is a for profit blog, and a top media outlet. Would you hold the same opinion if New York Times published a story utilizing the snatched photo above? I doubt it. Have some journalistic integrity.

Do you think if I stole the blog text above, and reposted it without proper credit CrunchGear wouldn’t cry foul?
