First impressions of the Penryn MacBook Pro

Having spent the last few hours reinstalling apps and customizing to my specific liking, I’ve noticed that using the multi-touch on the new Penryn MBP isn’t what I imagine it to be. The trackpad just isn’t big enough and I really wish Apple would have put the larger one, like the MBA, on the MBP. It’s not horrible or unusable by any means, but you’d figure with such a large palm rest area that a larger trackpad would make sense. Of course, this is a miniscule gripe and everything else seems to be working fine, but I figured I’d chime in and let you all know.

It’s much, much better than the MacBook Air in terms of functionality, but if that slimmed down sexy piece of hardware has anything on the MBP it’s the larger trackpad. Did any of you purchase a MacBook Air? Chime in with a comment and let us know.

[Update]: I’m not sure what the deal is but my Wi-Fi is being really funky right now. I’m sitting within two feet of my router and I’m not getting full bars. Matt has been having the same issues since he installed Leopard, but my MacBook had Leopard and its signal strength was always pretty good. I’ll keep investigating.

  1. Got a MBA, and I have to say it’s been the best thing to carry around. The 2 gigs of ram lets me breeze through all of my daily tasks–I don’t ever feel slowed by the 1.6GHz processor. The trackpad is definitely, definitely better, and I feel like the keyboard is more responsive as well. *shrug* Personal preference, I guess, but I love being able to carry this thin beauty around for daily tasks–oh, and I’m pretty sure the MBA kicks the MBP’s butt in terms of battery life. When was the last time a MBP ever got 4.5 hours on a single charge–consistently???

  3. Oh, how I don’t miss the problems associated with owning a Mac. When they’re working, I love em. But when you run into problems, you’re at Apple’s mercy.

  5. Apple goes out of their way to suppress information regarding flaws in their products, censoring their own forums. They use their “technical support” site as more of a Mac propaganda site than anything else.

    Apple routinely releases updates that, literally, breaks your Mac, and you won’t hear a peep from them about it. No “oops, our bad”. No fix. No nothing.

    I had a similar issue to Peter’s Airport issue with my Macbook, directly caused by an Airport “update”. I went months without being able to hold a wireless connection. The only thing I got out of Apple was suppression of information regarding the update, and any possible fixes. For me, it was an eye opening situation, and it really changed my opinion of the Apple Machine.

    Microsoft goes out of their way to provide information on software issues and resolutions. Their knowledge base has no equal. Their products may not be perfect, but at least they don’t go out of their way to stop you from fixing your software problems.

    Nate good sir I believe you haven’t taken a look at Apple in the last what, 5 years or so? While you were living under a rock I was watching the inspiring company update and innovate to provide for their customers. I really don’t understand how you can think that about Apple. Then again maybe you mixed up Microsoft and Apple while you hid away under your rock.

    As far as the Wi-Fi problem, mebbe it’s the fact that the thing is completely covered in Apple Steel. In my reasoning that wouldn’t play nice with Wi-Fi… but not that severely. I think I good reboot would do you good. And make sure to let it cool down too.

  8. If you want to continue life as an Apple sheep, be my guest. For me, it’s a been there, done that, situation.

    I don’t care how inspirational something is if it doesn’t work. When you’re sitting there a few months from now staring at your broken down Mac, tell me how inspiring it is.

  9. Hey Nate,

    I know an awful lot of 5, 6 and 7 year olds that have no problems with their Mac or iPods. Further, I’ve never seen one sitting in front of a dead Mac. I wish I could say the same for Windows :{
