The Power Gorilla folks sell solar and batter-powered rechargers for portable devices. Their latest invention is the Power Gorilla, spare battery for laptops that can run a device for about TK hours on one charge. You can pair it with their solar panels to power your laptop with the sun. They’ve had one laptop running on solar power for about a month now, which is pretty impressive.
You might find them in some stores in the US, so keep an eye out. The Gorilla should be out in the summer.

um… wtf? link to mfr site? more info? SOMETHING? c’mon now, thought you guys were better than to post a gadget post with no link.
hey, check out powermonkey.com, they have lots of pix, etc
@ trystero:
This may be a few (ok, a bit more than a few) months late, but it looks like the PowerGorilla is finally available in the US. I haven’t used it, but it was reviewed by MetaEfficient, and seems to be worth the steep cost all things considered. Looks like they also have a solar component to the Powergorilla, the “a href=”http://www.ecogeekliving.com/solargorilla-solar-laptop-charger.html”>SolarGorilla which seems to do similar things, but with solar of course!
Ciao.
just added. I didn’t have the info in front of me last night.
“TK hours”? “ten kilo-hours”?
I’ve found this excellent solar charger online – description below:
The Power Monkey Explorer Travel Charger provides instant power wherever you are using 2 reusable sources of power to charge your mobile phone, iPod, MP3 Player, BlackBerry, PDA, digital camera, portable games console and more with no batteries required! Combined with the solar-slave, the Power Monkey Explorer Travel Charger can also be used to charge many of your digital devices, so you have back-up power at all times, simply attach to your rucksack, window or take anywhere the sun shines. Provided 60% pre-charged the Power Monkey Explorer Travel Charger can be used straight out of the box.
I found a US store that carries the Power Monkey (the smaller version that charges cell phones, ipods, and other small electronic devices) I hear that EarthtechProducts.com will be carrying the Power Gorilla (the one for laptops) in a few days..(I called them) I will post the link for the Power Gorilla when I get it.
take care all!
I forget to leave the link for Earthtech Products on my last post.. sorry about that here is the link for the Power Monkey Solar Explorer.
The PowerGorilla Solar Charger is priced the lowest at Earthtech Products. I already did the price research already and saw that they have really great reviews as well.
Link to the Power Gorilla Solar Charger
@ John Haley – um, spam much? I think we got the point after message #2 that you shill for this site. Really no need to link bomb and ruin an otherwise interesting thread.
Huh? Just being helpful since people want to know where to find this new gadget.. but thanks anyway for the fine detective work tabor_pitts.
You now can see the powergorilla in augmented reality 3D demo as it if is in your hand. Thanks to Asia-XL and Holland-XL. Go have a look its cool.
The powergorilla is a real life saver for all of those road warriors!! It is certain that business travelers would use their laptops more if they knew they were carrying extra power with them!!!
