Behold the Chinavasion.com Breathalyzer Keychain Car Gadget with built-in flashlight and stopwatch. It costs a meager $4.43 — far less than other breathalyzer gadgets — and it seems to work although it tops out at a 0.05 blood alcohol content (BAC) reading, so you’ll never really be quite sure if you’re over the 0.08 limit in most states.

Still, it’d be good to use if you want to see if you’re at least close to the limit. It registers a yellow light at 0.02 and a red light at 0.05. I took it to a St. Patrick’s Day party last night and gave it a whirl. Sure enough, after three beers I was blowing yellow and by the end of the night it was red, red, red.

All in all, it’s a great device for under five dollars. I just wish it would register higher BAC levels. If it could, it’d go from a good gag gift to downright useful and invaluable tool for keeping yourself safe. Still, for five bucks, pick one up and have some fun.

  • Great way to demo a product.

BTW: You don’t need a breath analyzer to tell that you are inebriated. The flush look on your face, slurred speech, droopy eyes and semi-incoherent speech do that for 5 buck less. Five bucks that you can use to buy more beer.

I’d estimate you at about .7-.9.

  • All fun aside – these gadgets don’t claim to be 100% accurate. The 0.05 reading may actually read as high as 0.08 on a professional (i.e. police) breathalyzer. If I blew a 0.05 on a keychain I would hope I’d have sense to quit drinking if I was intending to drive later – not keep drinking. Once your judgement is impaired; you’re bound to make the wrong choice – and too often that ends poorly. So…drink responsibly! And drive sober.
