CrunchDeals: 8GB iPhone for $249

While perusing the AT&T wireless site for a replacement phone for my mom I saw that refurbed 8GB iPhones are going for $100 less than Apple’s refurbs. Would you pay $249 for an iPhone? I’m tempted, I really am. But then there’s always that asterisk.

Can’t you just buy the phone and unlock it using Ziphone, thus avoiding the 2-year commitment? Then you can use it on AT&T or TMob or whatever GSM carrier you like. Apple’s fancy online activation process means you don’t have to sign any 2-year documents in-store, no? At least that’s what it meant when I bought my iPhone last Fall and unlocked it to use on TMob.

Come on - take one for the team. The prior buzz for the in-store refurbs had several people picking them up without contracts. They were rumored to be widely available in-store despite the AT&T memos that circulated indicating they’d be in limited availability.
Given a choice between using a port-a-potty at a state fair on a 100 degree humid summer day — and visiting a cell phone store — I’d use the port-a-potty.
Someone has to order one of these online and see how they enforce the 2 year contract since it seems to all be done via iTunes.
Maybe the contract is just a bluff.
Now, who’s brave…?

I think you’re right.
When you put the iPhone in your cart, it says tells you that you select your services when you receive the phone. I’d guess you could order one of these and jailbreak it just like any other iPhone.

I saw the post and looked at the picture, and then back at the post for a sec, and at the picture, and then I clicked the link, and THEN I read the asterisk and my exhilaration was trumped!
