Inside the Eye-Fi card

scaledinnards-small.jpg

Ever wonder what was inside your Eye-Fi card? No? Well, Ikontools opened one up to tell you. It basically contains the Atheros radio-on-chip, some Samsung flash, and a whole lot of suck because you can’t take pictures of any quality and be sure they’ll ever upload automatically over Wi-Fi, one of the things the Eye-Fi was supposed to do seamlessly. Honestly, I had high hopes for the product but I haven’t gotten it to work correctly once in the month I’ve had it. Anyway, feast your eyes on some solid state, kids, while I go simmer in my own hate.

I feel your hate. I finally got mine installed last night after putting the reader in a USB hub with a long cord and holding it up in the air facing my wifi router 10 feet away. After putting the card in my camera, the only way I could get it to connect to the network was to place it literally 1 foot away from the router. 5 feet away and it wouldn’t work.

I’m not sure what your problems are, but has worked perfectly every time with my Canon SD700IS

Pictures upload to Flickr and iPhoto through my WPA encrypted wi-fi, just like I set it up to do. And as to distance, it’s doing it from at least 50 feet away.

Tim,

That kind of range is certainly not what we expect or what we typically see from users. You should be seeing 35-45 feet indoors. Please contact Eye-Fi Technical Support at (877) 873-9334 and let them know that Larry (Support Engineering Lead) asked you to call. I would like to have the engineering team have a look at your Eye-FI Card to learn what is wrong with it. That kind of range is unusual, typically you will be getting 35-45 feet indoors.

One of us from Eye-Fi will also be contacting John since his experience falls short of what we expect and is not acceptable. We want to see him up and running with his card as well.

I’d already started the support process, and this morning I got an RMA, so I’ll report back if my replacement works better. I really want to like the eye-fi, this was just so frustrating it made me a hater. If it turns out I just got a bum unit though, I’ll be more than happy.

OK, I got a replacement card, and the range is indeed much better. I haven’t done any distance tests, but this time around I didn’t have to go to any great lengths to get it to connect and upload photos.

Whether or not it turns out to be useful in the long run, I don’t know, but at least my major objection’s covered. Thanks to eye-fi for the quick turnaround on this! I certainly can’t complain about their customer service, and that’s worth a lot these days.
