And yet... that fancy combo drive is what is not working even after replacement. Yeah, I'm not bitter. Much.

I should also mention I'm trying to return said loaded Thinkpad. It's ironic that their 21 day return policy should be so obvious to me on day 29 when the unit decides to ignore DVD's.

I respect your opinion but you're a rarity. As I travel quite a bit my self and as does my family. They use tthe disc drive about 10 times in a day. like I said previous a laptop without a disc drive is just a fancy PMP.

I've personally got a loaded Thinkpad that is a full on desktop replacement.

That said, when I travel for work it is my MacBook Air w/SSD wins each time hands down.

People that dismiss the MacBook Air tend to be thinking in terms that are myopic to their own day to day vs. the requirements of a mobile professional.

SSD premium is a small price penalty compared to lost drives on the road and the absurdity of moving parts tied to data retrieval.

BTW, I was able to calculate that over the past 4 years I have used CDs/DVDs in a laptop a total of 10 times. Why so few? Simple... The software and content I care about is available online and not relegated to the relic of hard media formats.

All manufacturers will be contracturally prevented from loading the OEM version of XP come this June. From then on, factory preloads of new machines will be various Vista flavors....

Machines produced before that date could still have XP.

A customer can put on their own copy of XP as well.

This is just the OEM flavor of XP that manufacturers won't be able to put on.

I've always been a firm believer that the Mac Book Air is just a novelity. A laptop is completely USELESS without a optical drive. When it comes down to it the mac book air is just a really expensive, big, and thin PMP. Apple and Steve Jobs are a bunch of crooks, they know Apple Fan boys are willing to pay extra for the cool factor and thats why they charge outrageous prices for SSD.

who the hell wants to purchase an expensive lt and have a mac at home?
people buy laptops to replace desktops... duh.
Lenovo/IBM did a great job on countermarketing.
Let's just hope they don't somehow get sucked into touting Vista.

Y'know I remember a time when people used to flip out about iMacs not having a floppy disk.... and the jokes sounded a heck of a lot like they do with the no-optical drive MB Air. As the owner of a MBP, I can honestly say that I've used the dvd drive probably 5 times to watch movies, and thrice to install software. I think that those DVDs being watched were because this machine is my main, which the Air is not meant to be. Assuming someone with an Air has another mac/PC at home serving whatever media needs they come up with, I just don't get the point of an optical drive in a laptop. For those of us who use our laptops exclusively, of course, this is another issue.

I would actually come back to be a fan if Apple opened their O/S to other computers, I left MAC a while ago because of that. I much prefered Mac O/S at the time than Windows, but I couldn't stand to be trap with a single manufacturer.

hot Air. nice one :)

Really though, having a DVD drive built in is much more important than being able to pose with your MacBook Air. Like a douche bag.
