I wouldn't say Ubuntu ( My current flavour of choice ) is dumbed down. I would say that it has been made more user friendly. With menu's and navigation made simple. Pre-installed Open Office and Firefox. Basically what your average Joe needs.

But the great thing about Ubuntu is, there is a GUI option for nearly everything. No terminal needed!

I was simply stunned with the amount of free open source software avaible through the simple GUI add/remove programs. I mean theres a music player for every taste.

Why pay? I mean I was about to scrap this laptop because Vista very slow. But as a last attempt I put in a Ubuntu Live CD.... No need for a beefy laptop to get Vista effects and great software.
