I dabbled a bit in the past, but am now looking to get back in the Linux game. After school, when I have time to mess around before going off to my summer D.C. internship, I am going to get a nice fat new laptop HDD, dual boot *nix something and some windows (I have vista x64... :( sigh) on my dell m1330, just because I miss / could use some of that linux utility in my life. oh well.

Redhat was what I started with in 2000. I started in the command line in Redhat 6.0 (Hedwig). and slowly moved to Mandrake with a gui over a couple of years. When Knoppix hit the net, I used that for a while. I think it is a great recovery tool too. Now days I use Debian/Ubuntu (both) and OpenBSD. As far as the floppy firewall goes, I would of used a floppy setup too. Although I would of probably of used OpenBSD with "pf" instead of Linux and "ipchains" or "iptables" If you are proficient in TCP/IP protocol, I guess you could lock down your network with any of them and not have to worry. A 386 would of suffice no problem, if it is totally dedicated to being a firewall.

My favorite was Slackware, though with the size of the distro (and most "main" distros) has become too bloated. Therefore, Slax. Great OS, under 200mb, specifically tailored for live use with a usb stick and uses modules for other software/addons. Ubuntu, obviously.

Once in a while I still have to checkup on DSL, always have a copy of Knoppix for windows troubles, and have dabbled with gOS (love premise with my being a Gboy, but it's not quite there yet).

Another one I really like checking out is MenuetOS - [from the site] "...written entirely in 32/64 bit assembly language..., that fits on a single floppy!

Yes, I have OCmD - Obsessive Compulsive Minimalism Disorder

Sorry. I geeked out for a minute. Basically I worked as a programmer and hated my life is what that means.

Wow - I think I understood about 10 words in the whole post. I hope am I not the only person who went HUH after reading -

"It was pre 2K madness and I was programming COBOL on a VAX machine in Warsaw, Poland. We used to write scripts using a scriptable terminal program to send Man-Machine Language codes to Nokia switches to add call forwarding to thousands of subscribers, for example."

2K - the year 2000 and then I am lost.
