When I first saw the Instinct a few weeks ago I said “Finally.” Finally, someone, somewhere, has created an interface and a device that follows the spirit and ease-of-use of the iPhone without resorting to wholesale mimicry. Samsung built the UI from the ground up with data convergence in mind and their focus and efforts paid off. Everything in this phone — all of the contact data and information — can be used in almost all of the applications. It has built-in GPS and Sprint TV as well as Microsoft Live Search. But, thankfully, it doesn’t run Windows Mobile.
We’ll be sing more on the Instinct in the next few weeks but in the brief period we had with it both Peter and I came away impressed. Rather than slapping gestures over a wonky UI or flopping the same old menus onto a haptic touchscreen, Samsung and Sprint have created an impressive phone that will stand on its own when its finally released. We’re excited. We think you should be, too.

Happy to see visual voicemail coming soon although with the $30/mo blackberry package on the Pearl, it’s going to be difficult justifying the upgrade. I’m most interested to see how well they deliver on the UI and ease of use on common applications.
this is stupid, cuz they are just copying apple.
It’s called competition pal
They are not copying apple, get your facts straight apple copied LG Prada.
“cuz”
Come on dude.
well i dnt think its stupid i think it’s a good comeback for sprint and the customers that love sprint and dnt want to leave because of any iphone… and im sur you would like the phone to…try it you might be suprise
umm no.. this phone will top the IPHONE.. sprint and samsung came up with this whole touch phone first.. but they let apple take it first.. so.. check ur info before you start saying anything…. I love sprint and this is phone im buying..
so what.
Can anything rival the marketing and hype around the iPhone? No. Just the next version of the iPhone.
I own the Sprint Mogul which I believe is already better than the iPhone today. Still, too many Apple Fanboys and not many Sprint fans.
Reality check: nothing running “Windows Mobile” is comparable to the iPhone in any manner other than data rates. Now, if you want to compare it to RIM’s products, that’s a different story. To claim otherwise is simply more proof that you can’t underestimate the power of denial.
1st off i am a sprint emlployee and the iphone isnt even all that. Any windows phone is way better then the iphone. If you want a toy then the iphone is for u. But if you want buisness then thats what windows is, and the the mogul is100% percent better then that phone. The iphone is a nice design and i love videos on it as in movies and music. But thats it. The internet is slow and so is the new one because our ev do rev A is faster then 3g and there just getting 3g when were upgrading soon into wimax
well i like the old prepaid phones myself.now, take that boys!!
why copy the iphone when you can go out and get a real iphone LOL
because this will be about $100 cheaper with better functionality and on a better network, that’s why. Or, if you’re into spending more for less, go that route. You’re call.
Hmmm. . .I think you mean “your call.” I guess the haters don’t spend much time in school these days, which explains the flawed judgment and the disconnect from facts.
also because AT&T’s service sucks in many markets including los angeles
LOL! Don’t agree with your point of view but, enjoyed your attention to detail.
What exactly do you consider copying? Like the LG Prada copying the iphone?…. Oh wait.. the Prada came out over 6 months before the iphone … and what is with all of you fanboys always trying to say every phone is trying to copy the iphone. How many realistic designs are possible for an all touch screen phone??? and besides the iphone is on a 2g network that’s rediculously slow and the new Instinct is going to be EVDO Rev A which is going to blow it away… and Its got gps enabled on it too… Why would you buy an iphone??? and then spend the money that AT&T charges for internet access on the slow 2g network.. Let me see I can get a phone with less features and spend more money on both the phone and service … why dont I go and buy an iphone so I can be a fanboy too untill apple puts out there next phone then I can get on the web and tell everyone how great it is…..
The reason is this phone is everything the Iphone isn’t. It has expandable memory (sd card), It’s insurable which the iphone was not, it comes with 2 batteries, it has visual vocemail. Apple and at&t are in litigation with the developers of visual voicemail. You can send and recieved multimedia messages and i could go on and on. The best thing, knowing Sprint, it’s not going to cost 600.00 coming out the gate.
This would have beat the iPhone last year maybe, but unless Sammy and Sprint plan on opening up the device to third party software, which I doubt they will. This will not make a dent in the iPhone market….
Unless it’s half the price or so….
This screenshot is a hoax, there is no “Main” or “Web”. The real menu goes like this: Hip - Boring - Fun - Sucks
April Fools!!!
Looks promising, but the iPhone is such a winner because of its mixed iPod abilities. Samsung doesn’t own a mass-used music download store, and Apple does. Thus I truely believe that even if it IS better, it won’t surpass the iPhone.
P.S. I don’t even have an iPhone.
The sprint music store offeres .99 downloads and they are over the air downloads on a REAL 3G network. None of that Itunes control over your music and what you can do with it.
The true question is if the touch screen keyboard will work better than the iphone. I don’t know if anyone has tried texting with the iphone, I have and it sucks. The sales man repeatly tried to show me how and kept using his index finger.. who types this way on a phone. Phone users use thumbs to type. I personally don’t care about the music portion.
i have used it and yes it is way better. also it vibrates as well and the tele nav gps is awsome
Has anyone beat the ipod? Same goes with iphone. You can buy a creative mp3 player that will do more and cost less than an ipod. But who wants a creative mp3 player when you can have the I’m cool status of an Apple product. Case closed.
Yea a long feature list - that really helped CReative & the Zune … the bottom line is they’ll want to price this close to the Iphone because they think it’s as good (though with the additional SD card price, probabaly higher than iphone) … but the bottom line will be you’ll be trying to babble on about its camera megapixel when people just waklk away after saying,
“oh, you couldn’t afford a real iPhone?”
And by the time this is available, the iphone apps PR machine will generate about a $1 billion dollars worth of PR and the only customers left are people who refuse flat out to pay more than $49 for a phone.
Its’ what happening to MS right now - marginalized as the “Cheap” choice when you cannot afford better or the best.
So, even if you can afford an iPhone, no one will believe you unless you gt an iPhone … this phone will be the one-eyed king in the land of the blind …
I don’t see a calendar.
Umm samsung can’t even make a good real keyboard much less a virtual one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have about 2000 contacts in MS Outlook. I need a phone that will sync to this, plus calender. Anyone know if this can?
according to phonescoop.com, this phone will hold 600 contacts only. It’d be nice if you could use a memory card for other contacts, but it would be hard for the phone to keep track of memory that can be removed…
Thanks for the sad info, Mike. I am looking for a phone that can do many of the things you can do with Windows mobile, only NOT windows mobile. It is soooooooooo slow and glitchy
This might not be the phone for you. HTC Mogul would be better or HTC Touch if you want the touch screen feel. Both now come with EVDO Rev A high speed internet from Sprint. Mogul has GPS intergrated now.
WoW! Looks cool!
all about samsung instinct
This may just convince me to ditch my touch and go with a Samsung. (never thought I’d say that)
This phone looks just like The cect p168 iclone. Sprint is garbage. All of the Sprint phones are behind in time.
You must be an Idiot to say that, get a life
get a life you must be an idiot to say that sprint IS THE BEST
Sorry dude. Even if the Samsung could wipe my butt, me and else would rather have an iphone. Weren’t you reading the above posts? Creative and Zune are priced lower and do much more than the ipod but everyone wants an ipod. Marketing 101, Marketing 101, Marketing 101, Marketing 101, Marketing 101, Marketing 101, Marketing 101, Marketing 101,……Hello, McFly?
Sorry Alex, you are right about marketing strategies, but you know the old saying “If everyone else was going to jump off of a bridge would you too?” The only reason people want an iphone is because its the trendy thing to do. So for all of you fanboys who worship the ground Steve Jobs walks on, you might want to reevaluate your way of thinking and actually look at products and consider other options not just made by Apple
You don’t get it. Not everyone is an Apple fanboy. I for one, enjoy apple products, but I don’t dog on Microsoft or anyone else except every once in a while just to start a flame war (I know its wrong, but I can’t help myself). But the thing is, the iPhone ACTUALLY is a pretty good phone and iPod rolled into one. People will look at iPods b/c they are well known, and Apple makes a nice system that most people can use, regardless of technical knowledge. And so when kids want both a phone and an ipod nowadays, why not just kill two birds with one stone and get an iPhone? It makes sense b/c LOTS of people are just dumb enough to use an iPhone and be amazed. And not-so-many people are smart enough to look at it and say, well, I’ve seen better. When something so simplistic comes along like that, and it just works, then it’s worth getting. And yes, lots of people will get one. Eventually. At my school I can only name maybe 4 people who own an iPhone, and only one of them has it just to look cool (he’s rich). But the other three said that their parents used logic to deduce that the cost would be less to just go with the iPhone.
Do you understand what I’m saying? (Most) people don’t get iPods or iPhone merely to look cool, but because they work well and the cost of an iPod AND a phone is more than just an iPhone.
Sound like you’re a follower not a leader……………………….Marketing 101 you got and F
I agree with Alex. iphone is heading the same way as the ipod. Everyone is jumping off that proverbial bridge. You may not like it, and it’s understandable but it’s not reality. Dude what kind of phone do you have? uh I have the new Sprint Samsung phone. It’s just like the iphone.
OK, you might agree with Alex , but what does it matter what other people think??? Why dont you get a phone that has more features that you can actually use??? Isn’t that the main reason to buy a phone??? or is it just to get the cool trendy thing even though there are better devices out there??? People in general are just so stupid and can’t think for themselves, so they have to rely on TV and other forms of marketing to tell them what they like… GET A LIFE AND THINK FOR YOURSELVES!!!! DONT BUY INTO THE PROPAGANDA!!!!
No, I’m thinking it will flow more like this:
“I have the iPhone; dude what kind of phone is that?”
“I have the new Instinct from Sprint. Dude — it’s waaaay better than the iPhone.”
Peep game:
http://www.nowisgood.com/?id9=SEM
My thoughts are that most people don’t have anything against the iPhone, its the mentality of the people that have them. The “My phone is better than your phone!” mentality. I agree with iPhone users on this, it is a nice smartphone. However I don’t think it is the best thing since sliced bread. Motorola made a phone the, A1000 ( http://www.symbian.com/phones/mot_a1000.html ), in 2004, that has the same form factor, a touchscreen, and 3G. It is Symbian based, so the SDK is out there. My point is that people who have iPhones don’t know, or care to know, that this form factor has been around for years. They also don’t realize that all smartphones aren’t sold in the U.S. If I were so inclined I could say that the iPhone was stolen from Motorola….Apple took an existing concept, used current technology to bring it up to date, marketed the hell out of it, and sold it with a 60% profit margin. So people that say that these or any other similar phones are knock offs of the iPhone are just plain wrong. This comment is not to dog the iPhone just enlighten those that have them, that it really isn’t really a new innovation. This opinion was not meant to start a flame war, just to be informative..
it seems me that this phone is for the people who were smart enough to hang with sprint during the iphone craze….now that sprint has there phone which is a better product at a lower price it seems like the haters are coming out the bushes…i mean if you can get a lexus for the price of a ford would you???…lol..lol
Why can’t these companies be bold and create a design totally distinctive from Apple?. Why does Apple have to be the trend setter everyone wants to copy? Still, if a Ford has everything that a Lexus has, you best believe most people will still want the Lexus ’cause it makes them feel better. Doesn’t make sense but you feel good and that’s what it’s all about in life. Human nature. You may be different and say you want the loaded product but name means everything in this world.
lol the Samsung will never be comporable to a Lexus against the iPhone. It’s still a Ford. Now really…..sigh
The USP of the new phone, apart from the touch screen( which can be admittedly seen to be imitating iPhone) is the Ev-Do connectivity and the fact that it supports Sprint TV. For access to all video heavy services ( plenty of them around) this phone will be a boon, the iPhone does not come close.
The launch of XOHM will laso see the Samsung-Sprint combo launch an EV-Do and WiMAX phone.
I agree, Amitabh. While the iPhone is an amazing product, the single thing that will set the Samsung Instinct apart from it is the EV-Do, REV-A data speeds. I work for Sprint as a technician, and have hoped that we would come out with a product that people would compare to the iPhone. I think we’ve done it! Alright, Techboy…you should read posts before posting yourself. Did you not see that the iPhone isn’t a new innovation? Just because it is the most popular device of its kind, doesn’t mean it was the first. In fact, most products fail the first time they’re introduced to the market. Apple didn’t create the concept, they just made it better. I personally believe that Samsung has made a great product in the Instinct. When someone shows you their Instinct for the first time, you’ll say, “My phone’s better than your phone”, but then they’ll show you the internet. This is where you say, “You were right and I was wrong”. The EV-Do, REV-A capabilities will blow the iPhone out of the water. The only time you can achieve data speeds that fast on the iPhone is when you’re connected to the web via a wireless router. To all you iPhone users out there, I’m not doggin on your phone, but try to think outside of the box every once in a while. By the way…Apple offered the iPhone to Sprint first…we chose not to sell it.
ok mr smart tech guy…how much is this thing gonna cost with this new fancy internet? and are we going to have to get some new internet plan to have the ev-do
It’s also coming out a year late, meaning it’s a year behind. This summer apple will release to iPhone 2 which will crush this in every aspect - even data transfer capacity - HSDPDA.
you mean: 3.5G HSDPA
Well iphone would crush everyone with the HSDPA, except ATT has barely built the thing out so unless you live in europe, you will still be limping along with WIFI and edge the majority of the time
Heres the biggest reason to go with Instinct:
Sprint Unlimited.
$99/month for unlimited EVERYTHING
data, voice, texting……
not to mention a better, faster network
…still, the cool factor is lacking big time. Most people are looking for the cool factor. Just like living in the cool neighborhood, driving the cool car, wearing the cool clothes eating at the cool restaurants, we want cool in our cell phones too. Iphone is still it. My timex tells time like a Rolex but I definitely want a Rolex ’cause it’s a cooler watch.
I saw an ad for this phone on YouTube of all places, and it showed a bunch of videos comparing it to the iPhone. I gotta say, it’s like the iPhone but better. Live TV, video recording, proper GPS…I’m just trying to find a price for it.
Technology is a tool, meant to be chosen as “right tool for the right job” .
Apple has it’s place, Microsoft has it’s place, Linux has it’s place.
I F%!ing can’t stand you Apple fanboys. If you’re doing multimedia and cinematic design, or are running a music studio…then I congratulate you on picking a platform that has great software and execution for those tasks.
Did Apple invent the mp3 player? Uh, no.
Did Apple invent the cellular phone? “, “.
nor did it invent the first cell phone, with an mp3 player, that can get on the web. No, it just made it pretty.
Apples greatest strength is an advertisement campaign that makes my eyes roll out of my skull, and it’s enticing aesthetic design.
I could give two shits who makes the phone I use, after all samsung doesn’t pay me to represent their product.
but what I see here is the perfect phone to date.
~Bluetooth for my 9886 alpine head unit? marvelous. And for a laser keyboard? splendid.
~Oh, and a portable powered wireless NIC? Boy that’s pretty damn sweet.
~voice dialing, texting, searching?? “say it’s so”.
~fastest web browing capabilities on a cell? wuwu.
~touchscreen…favorites, well I don’t really need to go on. We’ve read / seen the reviews (although a vast majority didn’t absorb it).
I would say not switching carriers, being able to use my discount for being on sprints network where I already get stellar reception, and getting the best phone currently in the market = $.
I am just curious what expandability iphone2 will provide, except maybe an obvious hardware tweak and filling the potholes of what they forgot the first time around.
christian.bryant@live.com
……then why can’t the design be original and not have to look like an iphone? Until someone comes up with a design entirely distinct from iphone, it will continue being what all other are measure against.
for everyone who doesn’t know the Instinct will be about $200-$250
now i want you to tell me you would rather have a $500-$600 dollar phone instead of an even better $200-$250 phone
to everyone who thinks the Instinct is coppying the iphone, how else are you supposed to make an awesome phone without a touchscreen? To me I think it’s impossible, and i agree with baseballhombre who cares if you’re considered cool if you have a $500-$600. I would rather have an awesome $200-$250 phone anyday.
My not beat the iphone but it sure is a slap in the face!
I know this phone well, we test all its internal componet - you can love or hate the instinct but please PLEASE dont drop it-
trust me on this.
i have a mogul with sprint and an iphone with tmobile/att…i go for anything that can be hacked and release full potential, lets see what the instinct can really do cause so far it doesnt impress me at all but i still will give it a try
The fact that you can insure the Instinct and not the IPhone shows how much faith Apple has in their product!!!
I AM STUMPED I DO NOT KNOW WHAT I WILL BUY YOU KNOW THE 3G IPHONE 2 WILL COME OUT IN JUNE AS WELL AS SPRINT INSTINCT I WAS ONE OF THE FIRST IPHONE COSTERMER 2 GREAT PHONES COMING OUT IN THE SAME MONTH JUNE 1 FOR SPRINT INSTINCT AND THE 3 G IPHONE BE SHORTLY AFFTER OR MAY BE ON THE SAME DAY YIKES I LIKE THE IPHONE BECAUSE IT HAS PLENTY OF STORAGE THE SPRINT INSTINCT HAS MICRO SD SLOTS FOR 8 GB MICRO SD CARDS BUT I HEARD THEY HAVE A 12 AND 16 GB MICRO SD CARDS COMMING OUT SOON THEY BOTH HAVE 2 MP CAMRAS SPRINT INSTINCT HAS TV AND GAMES AND VOICE TO ACTION BUTON JUST LIKE STAR TREK WICH IS COOL THEY BOTH HAVE BIG TOCH SCREENS TOO TEHY BOTH HAVE ENOUGH STORAGE FOR MY NEEDS AND BOTH HAVE PRYTTY FAST INTERNET SPEEDS TOO BUT IF WE ARE IN A HURRY OUR TOWN USES FIBER OPTIC MODEMS WE WERE THE FIRST TOWN IN GA TO GET THE FIBER OPTIC UPGRADE NOTHING IS LIKE GETTING YOUR FIBER OPTICS FOR THE DAY I DONT HTINK THEY HAVE FOUND THE LIMIT DATA CAPACITY PER SECOND FOR FIBER OPTICS INTERNET 2 IS ON THE WAY WILL BE TRILLION TIMES FASTER THEN TODAYS INTERNET I BET IN THE FUTUURE IT BE FIBER OPTIC HIGH SPEED CELLPHONES DATA HIGH SPEED SATELITES WICH WILL END THE DAIL UP MODEM TO POIKEY FOR MP3 VIDEOS ON DOMAND BUT WI-FI WI-MAX WILL HAVE THERE PLACE.

Braselton, one question…..????? WHY ALL THE SHOUTING???? All caps means you’re shouting at us. Please stop and tone it down a bit. There is a protocol here. Thank you.
If you have ATT get the IPhone if you have Sprint get the Samsung Instinct. But either way it doesn’t matter as long as you can make phone calls.
nice nice nice
What’s nice? The iphone or the instinct? …or do you want us to be nice?
alright so i have the touch by htc and im really looking forward to gettin the instinct but can anyone really tell me HOW MUCH its gonna cbe worth?!?!?!
Basically,I think the instinct is gonna be great, especially with it’s features.i like to get my money’s worth it.And to be quite frank I don’t care about anyone else’s opinion on who copied what or who’s better than.Point and Blank it’s called technology.Anyone who can be ready to compete and come out with better ideas to improve our technology is successful. So I can care less what other’s think of who builds better than who as long as I’m satisfied in what I pay for.If anyone likes the iphone better than instinct which I can’t understand how, when they don’t even have or have tried to explore an instinct to be so judgemental on an item for which they can’t even prove to be worth it or not. These people are quick to judge than to exlpore other items fro themselves.Technically speaking if you don’t understand how new technology works then you shouldn’t be putting your two senses in if you can’t explain why the instinct can probably be the next hottest thing.I myself will explore this instinct, then I’ll tell you how much better this phone is cause my own judgement if all I need.I like it I buy it,not cause everyone thinks it’s cool or not. It’s your own money getting spent on what you want not cause someone say buy it cause it’s cheap,or don’t buy it cause it’s a copy of the iphone. So reality check understand how this world gets around with different kinds of technology. This is what makes the world go round.Exploring to better things so forth.
why does every iphone fan think that apple built the first full touch screen phone. look at the motorola a1000 and m1000, lg prada, and numerous WM phones that debuted long b4 the iphone. THE IPHONE IS A COPY……I REPEAT, THE IPHONE IS A COPY!!!!!!!!! DO YOUR RESEARCH
Seems to me if my memory serves me right, the first graphical user interface was developed by Xerox which Apple bought and the rest is history.
Stop the presses!! Graphical user interface is a copy. I repeat, your os is a copy!!!!!! Do your research. Lol
can i say something?
samsung phone has hsdpa.. i used to make the sensors for samsung phone before.. why all this crap with the iphone.. we have better phones here, where you can save mp3 for as many as you like depending on the memory of you sd card.. web capability..videophone capability.. all of it plus for the fact that the camera has 5mp.. samsung has that too.. check out samsung loud… you want a cool phone? go for the phone with more features and more capability.. i dont go with any of you phones.. i have a motorola a1600 and its much better than the iphone.. what matters most is you know how to use your phone..especially knowing how to use it features and not just for fad….
by the way samsung loud has mp3 mixer.. cool huh?
nokia N95 has 5mp cam and 8gig memory, samsung d800…and more..and iphone is way more obsolete in my country… we wanted a 5mp cam and 16gig memory, with os…. a phone u cant imagine
