Atom Apples? Why Cupertino will spring for Intel’s new processor line
by Devin Coldewey on April 2, 2008

The evidence is compelling. The Atom processor is a great opportunity for many engineers and developers: its low power requirements and relatively high performance make it perfect for a range of small and medium-sized devices. Lots of companies are already on board, and Apple almost certainly will be soon. Why, you ask? Well, it’s the perfect match for a fantasy line of Apple products.

Not only will you probably be seeing Atom in the iPhone a year or two down the line, but it’s a good way to start a line of new products in that oh-so-thin form factor that the Air has popularized. Are you ready for a giant iPhone-like internet tablet, thinner than an Air and more touchable than a Touch? I know Apple’s ready. For your money.

  • There is a possibility that on June 9th, Steve Jobs, along with Paul Otellini, will announce the launch of the second generation iPhone using a version of the Intel Atom processor specifically designed for the iPhone. A unique partnership between these two companies is beginning to form. It’s probably been in the secretive planning stages for years.
