MySpace launches DRM-free music store

myspace logoMySpace today is launching its music store, a competitor to iTunes. The significant difference is that the music downloaded from MySpace will be DRM-free, so it will work with any MP3 player.

The catalog is limited for now, with only three of the big four labels included, but the fourth, EMI, has an option to join whenever it sees fit.

What’s notable is that MySpace has plans to include indie labels and even artists themselves in the store in the near future. We’re envisioning a way to download an album right from a band’s MySpace page. That’s good for the bands, but bad for us, because it means more crappy Nickelback-type bands will be randomly friending us. Great!

Why pay for downloads from Myspace when you can find so many free versions of any song online? I know it may not be “legal” to download free MP3’s but as crappy as music is nowadays (see Nickelback jab above) they are lucky we listen to music anymore at all - let alone pay for it.
