Sure, many Americans want big powerful cars, but shouldn't we be given options to choose? I for one do not want a big strong fast car. I drive a 1998 Chevy Metro with a 3-cylinder engine, and I get all of 55 horsepower, and that's plenty. It gets me where I need to go, and it goes the speed limit. That's all I need. Oh, and I averaged over 52mpg.

Car companies need to stop making generalizations of what Americans want, and let us decide. Furthermore, they have models out now that are small and weak and slow, but get bad gas mileage. Can someone please tell me what the heck is the point of owning a Chevy Aveo if it barely gets 30mpg?

Hey Bill, I too bought a Honda CRX-HF (High Fuel) that in 1987 with 35,000 miles on the engine got 54.2 mpg on a 3,000 mile camping trip to Canada. The significance to that is that we carried camping gear for the two of us and lots of the driving was winding mountain roads. Had plenty of power and I LOVED IT! I still have it but it now sits since it no longer will pass California smog requirements...still legal in the rest of the country...any offers?

Back in 1985 I bought a brand new Honda CRX HF model. It would get 48mpg city 52mpg Highway. Plus it had some get up and go!
I loved that car and wished I had never sold it. BTW $7667 new in 1985.

I wish what was said in that article had an once of truth to it but it doesn't. Listen most of the car companies have stock in oil and most of the oil companies have stock in car companies. If you want proof then why is it that toyota is able to make all of its cars multiple fueals inside two years and it takes GM till 2017. There is no reason whatsoever that the Largest car company in the world can't do that. but then again there is also no reason for Gas being over $3 a gallon but it is.. Follow the money and you follow the source of the problem..

You do realize that more than HALF the cars Chrysler produces HERE in this country get 40 and even push 50mpg right? I am not talking Itty Bitty cars here I am talking vans's SUV's !

Problem is they are immediately shipped over seas and NOT SOLD HERE. Why? Diesel Restrictions. They can not sell them legally here and they are quite content with that.

Why should we believe the lies we are constantly fed?
If Americans would not buy 50 mpg cars because of the propaganda we are fed, then why has the ford focus sold like hotcakes for the last 8 years?
Why have Kia, Honda, Saab, Suszuki, mini cooper, and many others filled the American roads? If Americans are cheap, then why does Detroit sell heavy expensive SUV's that ruin peoples finances at the pump?

The reason is simple, the media has become part of the problem. They refuse to do their job. Investigative reporting!! They have become the mouthpiece for the sloppy clumsy U.S. SUV (not auto)industry.

Volkswagon is coming to America with a massive flood of the new generation of clean, quiet and extremely efficient diesel autos this year. Then what excuse will the big three use? What will the puppet media say?

Ford already has a 50-65 mpg clean diesel Focus in Europe (for apprx $1200 more than gas), but they dont want to bring it here as they fear you wont buy their $35,000 hybrid escape! That gets less mpg than their gas focus now.

Look at Fords international site, then go to the United Kingdom, or England site. Follow the prompts to the fuel efficiency via specifications, its all there in their words. Dont believe the lies we are fed here. The technology has been here (europe)for a decade, and we are being told we would not buy it because of their blah blah blah greedy excuses.

Hmm an electric car is as fast as a gas car if not faster can out accelerate pretty much any gas car you or I are likely to buy and can be built for under $10k. OH and at $3 a gallon they get roughly the equivalent of 300mpg ($1 in Electricity from the grid will take you 100 miles)

Now why exactly do you think more mpg is more expensive? OH you believe detroit propaganda.

Oh and there safer and nearly silent too Oh and they will last nearly forever and almost never break down and require little maintenance.

AND THERE CHEAPER

Why don't we have them? Chevron owns the Large format NIMH patent for the batteries we NEED to make them work and REFUSES to license them for ANYTHING remotely EV related and that patent will not expire until 2015 and they bought it from GM after GM crushed there electric car program (literally with crushers as a wrecking yard)
