I have ridden two wheels for 27 years, will always love my motorcycles, and still have two in the garage; but since I bought my SE5 spyder they have mostly just sat there. This thing is not a bike, doesn’t lean like one, and the front end means you have to allow extra clearance, but I can ride year round! Rain and small patches of snow are no problem (I don’t even like taking my jeep on ice, so I would not try it with this) as well as gravel, or pot holes being of much less concern. The Spyder is fast, has power enough to more than hold it’s own on the road, is big enough to get some respect from cages, gives you the open air ride bikers love, gets LOTS of attention, and handles better than anything I have ever driven or ridden, including my mustang GT. In six weeks I put on 2440 miles, I just could not get off! Try one if you have not, and if you have to pick just one toy…pick this!

The Spyders are the real deal. They eliminate the hazards of loose gravel or oil in the road, but let you still enjoy the open air. They have stability control and the ABS stop you in much shorter distances than on a bike (3 big disc brakes). Lots of good discussion on http://www.spydertalk.com.

I had the opportunity to Demo ride the “Spyder” at Antique Vintage Days in Mid-Ohio last month and it put the hook in me. I really had a blast with it. I’ve been a motorcycle rider for over 40 years and this thing was a real treat for me. It has some unique features that I really like but then again so things I would change. It’s totally different than riding a two wheeler. I’m actually thinking of selling my bike and buy one of these but I am very betwixed and betweened about it. What do I do? I can’t afford two rides. I must sell my only motorcycle to do this. I’m afraid down the road I won’t care for it and want to go back. I’m getting up in years and would like to try a new experience. This is my answer. HELP !!!!

I purchased one 2 weeks ago, mostly for my wife to ride but I’m putting on the miles also. For reference, I’m a long time rider (23 years) and currently own four two-wheeled bikes, also. If you’re a motorcyclist it is not a replacement for a bike but a very interesting addition. The handling dynamics are very much like a racing cart so you miss the leaning and physics of a bike. But it has it’s own unique handling traits that are equally a blast to explore. It’s way faster than the specs indicate, really fun to push hard in the twisties and the single most attention getting device I’ve ever owned – people LOVE IT and always stop you to talk. It’s very cool, in it’s own way!

I go back and forth about these; I love reverse trikes just because they look cool, but ultimately I’m not convinced that they’re any safer than motorcycles and don’t really offer any advantage over two wheels except that you don’t have to put your feet down at a stoplight. Since motor(bi)cycles are cheaper to produce and are generally more efficient, I’m not really sure why I’d get one. Except that I really like it :)

I am looking forward to an upcoming test ride. There are forums of course and here in CA you still get to ride the carpool lane. Although they are not as gas efficient as you might think.
