I’ve had the M520 from Samsung for well over a month now and my previous opinion about the Sprint device hasn’t changed. It’s a great phone with some great features. Sure, it looks plain and boring, but you can’t judge a book by its cover now can you? Samsung just knows what they’re doing when it comes to sliders and the M520 is no different. In fact, I think I like it better than its sexy counterpart over at Helio, the Mysto. OMG!
In terms of hardware the M520 is rock solid. The spring assist on the sliding mechanism makes opening and closing the device as smooth as butter. The keyboard is laid out well and makes for easy pecking. The external buttons are well placed and distinct enough that you won’t hit the end button when you’re trying to hit the back button. On the right side you’ll find a camera button and microSD slot. On the left side is the proprietary port for headphones and charger. You’ll also find the volume button.
One feature that piqued my interest was the music player and the ability to put it in the background while you surf the Web or text message. The music player itself stinks and you won’t have much control over what’s going on other than playing, deleting or stopping tracks, which is fine because the M520 isn’t a music-centric device. It will, however, shut off when navigation is enabled or you want to use the camera/video recorder. You can download tracks from the Sprint Music Store or just load some content onto the microSD card like I did. I even got it to work with some mp3s I purchased through iTunes. Speaking of navigation, services are provided by Telenav and it works like a charm. The 1.3-megapixel camera works about as good as any other camera with the same resolution. The same goes for video quality. The conditions have to be perfect.
Watching Sprint TV isn’t too shabby, either. It’s more of a network specific quibble, but videos aren’t very smooth. Some lag occurs so the picture becomes pixilated or the bottom half becomes stagnant. It eventually clears itself up, but it’s a network snafu rather than a hardware issue. When going into full screen mode the picture flips from portrait to landscape and doesn’t shut off when you slide the phone closed.
A couple minor things that are nice to have include Bluetooth and the ability to use the device as a modem. Another cool thing I like is the addition of Favorites. From the home screen you can drop down into your favorites, which includes apps, services, or anything your heart desires as long as it doesn’t exceed 12 items. Setting up e-mail is very easy to do and syncs with AOL, AIM, Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail, POP or IMAP accounts, but you’re limited to three, which should be sufficient enough for most folks. Voice commands work great, though I never use such things on any device I own.
Overall, I’m happy with the M520. The few desired features it has have worked well and call quality is fine, too. My only qualm with the device goes for any Samsung device and that’s the proprietary charging/headphone port it uses. It’s a pain in the arse to carry around a separate charger and headset when a simple 2.5mm port and USB port would be sufficient enough. It’s what we want, Samsung. We demand it.
You’d be hard pressed to find a comparable device for $50 from Sprint. If you want a good phone with some fancy extras then the M520 should do the trick.

One thing that should be STRONGLY noted is that all these nifty tricks (TV, MP3 player, etc) will cost money to use!
I selected this phone in part because of that MP3 player. First off, I incurred a $75 “PCS data” charge for downloading the player software (why isn’t this just built into the phone?). I did this without any warning from Sprint as to the outrageous cost involved.
Now, I have to maintain a $15/month basic data plan to actually USE the player software that I supposedly downloaded. This is with MY music on the SD card.
Needless to say, I’m terrified to even TOUCH any of the other buttons.
What did you say you were paying for your monthly plan?
Yowsa.
You should get one of Sprint’s new plans that includes UNLIMITED DATA and 450 anytime minutes for $49.99. It might not be on the website but call Sprint and ask them about it. It’s great to use with this phone cause it’s free to get online and it’s what I switched to when I got this phone cause my Motorola v3m RAZR was a piece of crap…
Playing files with the Phone’s native player (no data usage and 100% better than Sprint’s Music Store player):
Menu > Tools > Mass Storage > File Manager > Memory Card (assuming that’s where your music is) > Browse to folder to find file > OK Button when file you want to play is highlight.
Enjoy.
Agreed, this is how i use the phone and it is free and marvelous.
hey,
i just got the samsung m520 and im wondering if you know how to transfer music from my itunes to the phone..
do i need a usb cable? if you can please write back to me asap…
at evy_queen@live.com
thanks
Jennifer, you don’t need any of that. Call into sprint customer care and ask them to remove your ability to get online. It’s called IP basic, and once they remove that off of your account, you should be able to use the player with no problem. You actually did not download any software, rather when you would start the player (and the gps, the tv, the sprint radio, the on demand, picture mail, email, etc.) and incur data charges for the store. Like I said if you don’t use any of the above features, call into sprint customer care and have them remove IP basic and disable the NAI to use the phone without ever worrying about incurring data charges. Also I would ask for some sort of credit for your $75 as Sprint generally lets you have 1 time to learn that lesson. :-) Also, you can go to “Menu”, “Settings”, “More”, “Data”, and switch it off right there so that you can still have access to data (at $.03/kb) if you need to send a picture or download a ringtone right quick. Hope this helps.
Thank you, Steve…
I would like to use the music player to directly play MP3’s from my SD chip. I can shut off Vision access on the phone, as you suggested, but the phone requires that I re-enable Vision in order to listen to music.
(It’s also annoying that it requests permission to do so, right then and there. I have teenagers occasionally using my phone, and such ready access to mega-dollar features is scary, to say the least!)
Sprint did drop the $75 charge and instead put us on the $15 basic Vision plan. My contention is that with this limited plan, I still run a very high risk of clicking the wrong (i.e. not “free”) TV channel, radio station, etc., or otherwise exceeding the privileges included in that plan. More $$$. And $15 per month to be able to use it as an MP3 player, as I hoped when we purchased the phone, is pretty steep.
So you’re saying that without Vision access, there actually IS no MP3 player on the phone? What a bummer….sigh…
Thanks so much, again…Sprint has been about useless in explaining any of this to me.
Jenn.
You can use a media player on your phone without vision. go to your tools menu mass storage memory card and listen away
Thank you so much, Danny!!! YES!!! It works!!!!!!
I’m very, very happy; over the weekend a guy at the Sprint store told me that it was impossible to play music on this “low end” phone without using Sprint Vision. It occurred to me that this would also make it impossible to use the player on airplane mode–another annoyance.
Thanks a ton, again. You guys are the greatest. ;-)
Jenn.
yes thanks for the info. I just bought this phone yesterday and was only able to initially find the player in the sprint music store as well.
now I can use the phone without being charged for internet connections
So how do I load mp3’s onto the sd chhip?
HAS ANYONE TRIED SPRINT TV ( FULL SCREEN ), ON THE SAMSUNG M250? …. EVERY PHONE I’VE TRIED GOES FROM SMOOTH TO CHOPPY WHEN YOU SWITCH TO FULL SCREEN … I’M TOLD THAT IT IS A CODEC PROBLEM?
Yes mine does this. Also, the regular (non-full screen mode) now seems to have the incorrect resolution. I went to the Sprint store today and noticed that the model in the store did the same thing. Something changed! It used to work correctly! No help from Sprint. They say “Some phones do this”. I’m going to attempt to return the phone.
not on mine u got a dud
I MEAN 520.
thats my B day may25
I just purchased this phone and am having trouble accessing the phone menus when the device is closed. I read somewhere that you hit the camera key and the ok to turn it on when closed but this is not working. Also, when I hold a button down for a long tine ot does come on but shows key lock. How the heck do you get this to work?
Access to keys is only available for a short while once the phone is closed. The keys lock after a brief lag. The unlock only when receiving a call. (I think) Check out the manual.
After many many attempts to resolve with Sprint, I finally gave up on the phone. And swapped it for a Katana DLX. The screen is smaller, but the phone works better and has a better battery life.
if you hold down the “ok” button for about 10 seconds the phone asks if you want to unlock the keys. hit ok and you can push away.
I’m about to buy the phone is there anything i need to know?
The phone is good as long as you do not plan on using the Sprint TV service with it. There are problems, and Sprint is ill equiped to help you deal with them. I swapped mine for a Katana DLX and am much happier.
Hey I didn’t know how to do it until today. I tried the converting mp3 file that is 30 sec to 3g2 format and it told me file saving failed. What you have to do is put a video or picture to the music. What I did is I took a mp3 file “harder, better, faster, stronger” by daft punk put it into a audio editor which was audacity since it is free. I cut it to 30 secs I wanted. Then I exported it as a mp3 file. Then I took the 30 secs file and put it in windows movie maker. Put it as the audio timeline then took a random picture and put it on the video timeline. Then I exported that as a wmv file. Then I took the wmv file and put it in quick media converter (which is a free converter) converted it to a 3g2 176×144 video. Then you put it on a micro sd card. If you didnt know how you get to the media player. You go to tools mass storage file manager memory card. Find it and move to your phone album. Then go to settings, sounds, ringer type, voice calls, my videos, then assign the file that is 30 secs long and has a picture playing with the song. If this doesnt work. Then I didn’t explain something right or you did something wrong. Woah that was long. Hope this helps. O yeah you can easily google all the programs I used and get them all for free. Open-source baby!! This phone is really good if you can figure out the loopholes. Which I have. I have figured out how to put ringtones and play music without it costing me more for the data plan. Also the file manager also plays videos too. I use realplayer to download the flv vidoes and then convert to 3g2 176×144. I lvoe this phone if you figure it out. The sprint people are so useless. One thing I am wonderign is that online it says this phone is capable of a 4gb micro sd card. But the manuel says it ponly supports are 2gb one. So I carry pone in my wallet. Other in my phone. Hope this helps everyone.
Have you ever got a comment on the phone that says media file saving has failed? I went through the whole process you told me, and that’s the message I got. I made sure I did everything right, so I’m not sure if I’m missing something.
Have you ever got the message ‘Media File saving has Failed’? or do you know what that would mean? I went thru all the steps you put down, and double checked them, but I still get that error message. Is there any suggestions you have?

Also, I notice when I put the song under phone album and go to assign it as a ringtone there is no picture associated with it–it shows the x you would see when a picture will not load correctly, so that must be why I’m getting the error message…do you know why it would be doing that?
“quick media converter” download is free; but to use it you need to BUY a liscense-am i missing something
thanks.
you dont noe how long it took me to get this, but i have looked everywhere n asked everyone n no one had the answers but you… good looks…
Thanks much Daniel Woike. It worked. Loaded a ringtone via PC cable, but I did have to convert the mp3 the a WMA file for it to work with Windows movie maker.
Thanks Again…hope you get this 1/11/09
OMG i was wondering how to do this ever since i got this phone. thank you so much!
Do not buy this phone! I have had it for 5 months and it is almost completely broken after normal wear and tear. The screen will blank out and when it is not blanked out the letters/pictures will shift to one side. Texting on this phone is terrible. Beware… choose something else.
instead of windows movie try VTAP videos work great and you can adjust res up or down
Hey Um Just One Question! i have this phone actually just got it yesterday! i am having trouble putting in music onto the micro sd! i did put the small one into the adapter (the bigger one) well i put it into my computer. well idk wut folder to put the music in!!!!!!!!!! and it wont let me put in the music because it says there is a write-protection and idk how to get rid of it!
it doesn’t matter where you put them. just go to the directory that you put them in when you do tools ->mass storage–> sd –>directory your music is in.
hey i got da same exact priblem …wenever i try 2 put songs in folder of “sd memory” watever..it just says u need write protection… need helppppppp
it’s a little button thing on the sim card.. goes up & down… slide it in the other direction
If you try to use this phone as a music player or picture browser, this is not for one. This phone can take 4 GB microSD but the maximum number of files that can be stored in your microSD is limited to around 100. Try put 150 picture files in DCIM>100SSMED folder, it will not work! Let me know if you know how to go around this limitation.
anyone know how to get calander info from your computer onto the 520?
THEY FIXED THE TV PROBLEM … GREAT PHONE.
BEST CASE … DAY DEALS.COM … M520 … RUBBERIZED … YOU WILL NEED SOME 5 MIN EPOXY / 3 MIN … WHATEVER …. and SOME SANDPAPER …. THE BOTTOM LIP ON THE TOP COVER SLIPS … JUST BUILD IT UP A LITTLE … AND YOU HAVE A GREAT COVER … BETTER IF YOU REPLACE THE PLASTIC SCREEN WITH ” BELKIN CLEAR SCREEN OVERLAYS ” … BOUGHT AND CUT TO SIZE AT VIRGIN MEGA STORE … { FOR IPOD } DOESN’T SCRATCH. …. IT’S EASY …. I MADE IT PERFECT.
Does anyone know if I was to get the data cable for this phone if I can download ringtones from my computer for free, without having internet service on my phone?
Read the post by Daniel Woike above, that is the only way you can assign custom ringtone for free.
hey for some reason crunch gear doesn’t load up on my comp on any browser so i am on my wii. anyway it has to be less than 512kb. so u cant use a video with ur ringtone only a still picture also i think some picture files can screw it up too. thanks for the comments.

PLEASE AND THANK YOU
Hey guys/girls. Basically I have had the M520 for a couple weeks now and I haven’t yet figured out how to get MP3’s on it. Is there some way to get music off iTunes and onto your phone? Do you need to get a USB cable that is compatible with the M520 or is there something else you can do to get the music onto the memory card (from your computer) and then play it on the phone?
PLEASE email me if you have ANY answers.

-Thanks
Quick questions.
I have the Power pack 450 plan. $39.99 for now. Until I upgrade to my employee plan.
But for now, I added my zip code on the On Demand feature and when I rollover the icon, it shows some news and weather. Will they charge for that?
Another question. Do I have to pay for music or can I add my own into the phone? If so, how? Micro SD card?
Thanks guys. E-Mail me if you wish.
THIS PHONE IS THE sUGER hONEY iCE tEA…LOL I LOVE THIS PHONE LIKE CRAZY…. IT DOES EVERYTHING!!!!!….
Hi everyone.
Just got this phone a couple days ago.
A couple things made me upset about it:
1. SD card, which supposed to hold up to 4GB, but manual says just 2GB… so which is it???
2. Speakerphone. It says on the website it has one, but nothing says in manual, and I can’t really find it..
I do not like when you have to guess about the phone.
Anyone found speakerphone on this phone?
yes its the button on top of the talk one
The answer to your first question is that it can support 4gb card. I too saw it in the manual as 2gb but it lies.
The second answer is that they isn’t a separate speaker on it. It is built into the ear speaker that just makes the sound louder.
So yeah.
lol well what i do to use the mp3 music thing is that i click on to the music icon at the menu then when the white screen with sprint music store powered by groove mobile letters you click cancel as soon as you see it…im guessing you already know how to put music in the memory card so after the white screen is there and you click cancel it will take you to a list of i think three options i guess you click all music and it should display all the music you have into your memory card …thats how i do it =D
Im about to get the phone. Are there any complicated things i need to know.
nahhh…just what i already said about the mp3…also the text messages get mixed up sometimes…and then you also get double and even triple copies of the same text…so be careful…but apart from that this phone is the best thing you could have in your life Figuratively speaking
I am trying to follow the steps that Daniel set out, but I encountered a slight problem. I am not allowed to download the quick media converter. I went to download.com and found it, and when I click “download” it goes to the correct page, but before the download starts it takes me to a http 404 “page not found” error. Anyone know why this may be, or a way around it?
http://www.cocoonsoftware.com/
this si the uerl to it. you should be able to download it there. you should of just googled quick media converter instead of going to download.com. Any more questins just ask.
Yeah, I had this phone for about 5 months and loved it, but I had the 450 Everything, which I’ve never heard of being $49.99. I found the easiest way to get music over was by using a Micro SD Adapter that fits any regular card reader. My biggest riff with the phone was (a) no YouTube which was actually fixed with the latest update of software and (b) not able to play WMA files and that’s what most of my music composed of. I was so excited when the update came out for the software, but again with the n/a to play WMA I switched to the Instinct. Oh btw I’m a Sprint Tech Support rep and even gone through the advanced training so if anybody needs any help my email comes to my phone and I’m always willing to help. Oh I almost forgot, if you do have a data plan the best FREE things known to the cellphone user are myxer.com (free ringtones, literally) and 1-800-FREE411. With Myxer like I said, it requires a data plan or at least your ability to use it, but if you don’t have unlimited like was stated earlier $.03/kb. With the free 411 you don’t need a data plan, but you have to listen to a 15 sec advertisement which I’m sure is way better than $.75 (OR MORE)!
Hey , i have this phone for almost 2 months and apparently the screen has giving up on me.
I cannot see anything except for a blank screen.
Also, you can make calls and accept calls , but just not see anything .
Do you have a solution to thi ?
Its a flaw in the phone and sometimes due to dropping it, getting it wet, etc.. But it has to do with its LCD display going out. Since you’ve only had it for 2 months, it’s still covered under Sprint’s 1 year warranty and they should replace it for you at any of their repair centers with a new phone. The only time that they should try to replace it with a refurbished phone is after the initial warranty wears out and you have to use you phone’s insurance to get it replaced. All in all, go get it replaced, the screen on your phone is dead.
I have been trying to play music off the SD with no luck. I do not have a data cable yet, it is on back order so I bought the SanDisk reader/writer to download music onto my memory card. For some reason it will not play. It is in fact something with the phone, the card works fine in my families other 2 phones. My M520 does recognize all photos on the card, it just will not play music. I called Sprint and was told I may have to convert my music to MP3 format. I am finding this is not that easy to do.
Any suggestions?
i just bought this phone 1 day ago. i’ve read many reviews, post purchase, that say the screen went out after just 2-3 months. the reviews swear they did nothig to make this happen.
does anyone know if this a manufacture defect or clumsy people? thanks for any info
Chan. Probably should have bought a different phone. It is due to faulty manufacturing. I am going in for my third phone of this model because its a piece of crap and they wont let me upgrade to a newer one.
My phone has been having problems since I bought it in March 2008. I had it replaced three times (2 refurbished, 1 new) and I still receive the same errors.
Sometimes the screen will freeze and say out of service. This will occur when I’m making a call, sending a text, or when I’m on the web. I also have a voicemail issue. I can NEVER tell when someone leaves a message. My text message and picturemail works fine but not the voicemail. After my first phone, I though it was a minor glitch but after the third phone I sill have the same issue.
I can live with the out of service problem but not knowing when I receive a voicemail is annyoing. I have tried everything from tech support to in store repair. I was going to upgrade but there are no phones from Samsung that I like right now. Does anyone have this problem? Does anyone have any suggestions?
i average about 170.00 per month. I like how they tell you 99.00 for everything then bill (first) topped over 2 c notes but my real beef is u cnt fmat the memory because they no supply a user lock code
this phone as nothing but junk.
i’ve had multiple problems since purchasing it about a year ago through sprint. the batery life is not to great to begin with. and on top of that i’ve had a problem with the plug-in part of the phones charger on the handset. it seems that roughly evry two to three months i have had this problem of the phone basically not recognizing the charger. i’ve had the phone replaced 3 times now. i am currently waiting for the forth one to be shipped in because my local sprint store didn’t have any in stock. i think at this point it goes without saying that this phone is not worth any amount of money.
Your user lock code is the last 4 numbers of your phone until you change it.
Screen went blank on my phone as well. Bought it in November 2008, screen went dead two months later. Wasn’t dropped, didn’t get it wet. I used the phone sparingly (less than 50 minutes a month), but aside from the screen the other problem is that apps will be running while it’s in my pocket. I’ve called Sprint and have had charges of $15 and $12 removed from my bill because of this. I can’t even see the screen, so how the hell can I run an app? Sprint is sending a new M520 out because of the crystals?? going bad on the screen. No questions asked. I had no insurance on the phone.
I have the old sprint vision – unlimited internet for $5.00. I was just told by a sprint rep that if I upgrade to a new Palm phone, that I will be basically getting the Everything Data plan for $5.00 b/c Vision no longer exists. Sounds too good to be true – $5.00 per month for unlimited internet on a treo. Can someone please confirm? Thanks!
Don’t trust them one little bit!!! I had one of those great vision w/ everything packages w/ 4 additional phones. Had it for years and was told by several sprint people to NEVER change my plan. PERIOD. Dropped my phone in the river (one of the first Katana’s) and bought a Razor outright for a ton of money. Thought they looked cool. Got the razor and my next bill was over $368!!! Called sprint and argued w/ them for about an hour after which a manager said because I got the razor, it wasn’t compatible w/ my plan so it was changed. I threw a royal fit, sent the razor back (in the provided sprint envelope), got a new Katana and still can’t get my old plan back. It no longer exists; sprint knocks off $ each month for their mistake. However, they now claim they have never received the Razor and won’t credit me or refund my money. This was 2 1/2 years ago and they want me to prove that I bought the phone. Believe me, I’ve tried everything even trying to get my cc company to send my old records (which they still haven’t). I still call and fight w/ them. Don’t trust them at all!!! Ask them a direct question concerning this and get it in writing.
This phone is honestly the most horrible phone I have ever purchased. I am about to back to the Sprint store to have them “look” at it, tell me I did something wrong, and order a new one. There is a reason this phone is discontinued. Its not worth it. My screen keeps going white and the last one I had went half white and the top half scrambled. I have never dropped this phone or gotten it wet. At first it seems fun but later just causes a headache. First purchased in Sept. of last year, replaced in Dec. and now replacing that one.
One drawback I didn’t see mentioned is the fact that since the wired headphone port is the same as the charging port, you can not charge the phone and use traditional wired headphones at the same time. This is not a problem if you listen using a bluetooth headset.
I’ve had nothing but good things about this phone, only thing is I think I was out ordered when my 12 year old got the Rumor because of the qwerty VS. T-9, I think i got hosed on that deal!
Great phone, all works fine with me!
if your screen is blank, turn your phone on, duh!
The Rant is better than the Rumor, it has the features of the M520, with the qwerty keypad. The Rumor will play music, but will not allow you to do anything else while you are playing. The Rant has the “send to background” option the M520 has. I had the Rumor, went to the M520, and got my daughter the Rant, I am liking the Rant the best so far. I love my M520, except for when I text.
i dont like this phone the sliding ability totally declines after about a month and the camera becomes so scratched that it is just a total mess and the paint cant stay on at all i am tired of sprint all the way
I had this phone for a couple of months and the LCD screen just stopped working and turned all white and I took it to the sprint store and they just ordered me another one but I think i’m just going to see if I can trade it. I don’t like it anymore the sliding really wears out the phone. I wouldn’t recommend this phone to anyone. Sorry to say that though.
I’ve had this phone for 6 months and the screen has gone white (which was fixable by removing and reinserting the battery). After a few months the phone screen went completely black and I could only see it when it was slid at a certain position. Many of my main keys have stoppped working as well, I can no longer send texts becasue the button to press ’send’ stopped working. The phone was good for a few months. but after awhile is stopped working properly. These problems are due to the phones incapability to be continuously slid, it would eventually cause a wire inside to loosen.
Just like everyone my screen has gone white. 1 month past the warranty and no insurance. After 13 months I need to pay to replace it, very disappointing, feel like I was hosed. Sprint sold me and others a piece of s phone, now they’re getting rewarded for it but sucking another purchase out of me, thanks!
We have had the M520 and are really unhappy with it. The crystals on the LCD screen have gone out 3 times now and the only thing they will do for us is replace it with a refurbished one. They have only been lasting a few months and then we send it in again with the same issue. I have been told there is not a problem with that but I cannot believe we are the only ones who have had to change our phones this many times and no one else has!
Ive had my m520 almost a year and had no problems with screen, Ive read many similar complaints about lcd.. it is easy to imagine opening or closing the slider by pushing on the screen to open(instead of using the little raised thing on slider or case) and causing damage. Cheap lcd clocks or calculators are easy to damage by only slight pressure or bending of screen. sadly, i know this from experience. The same is probably true of the m520 lcd; i beleive this an inherent problem with thin lcd screens.
this phone is the worst.
my screen turns white everytime i slide it up.
i;ve had i replaced three times.
overall. i don’t like the phone.
K…. you guys…. are fucking stupid. You go to the music option on the menu, and when it starts loading, you press cancel. That will take you straight to your player. No freaking charges. if your SD says it’s write protected, YOU NEED TO FLIP THE LITTLE LOCK SWITCH!
I do love this phone very very very very much. The screen has gone white on me many many times, with many different phones of the same model. Thank god for that equipment protection plan. Although I just found out that if you have your phone replaced three times in a twelve month period they cancel your insurance. I’m on lucky number five! It’s the sliding that’s breaking the phone….. wtf. That’s my only complaint is that it’s fucking broken on me billions of times.
all probs can be fixed read manual
