CrunchArcade: Revisiting the idea that Resident Evil 5 is racist
by Nicholas Deleon on April 10, 2008

re5racist

How lucky we are to be alive in 2008, friends! Our lives are so comfortable that we can LOOK FOR RACISM in Resident Evil 5.

Look, read this and form your own opinion. Newsweek’s N’Gai Croal lambasts the upcoming Capcom game for racist undertones. Or is it overtones, since the game is so damn racist and all?

“Croal’s first reaction to the trailer was, ‘Wow, clearly no one black worked on this game’.”

No joke, I actually felt myself getting hot reading Croal’s opinion. I simply cannot stand people injecting race into every little thing. So for the benefit of everyone, I’ll keep my opinion to myself. I think it’s safe to say, generally, I disagree with Croal.

  • Jesus christ, why do tree hugging hippies always have to find something to bitch about. This game isn’t racist it just happens to take place in Africa … AFRICA HAS BLACK PEOPLE .

  • I think the first 4+ Resident Evils were racist towards Whites. That’s 4+ times the amount of 1. 4+!

And while we’re at it…The whole series is racist towards zombies. I mean, come on, they’re still people…just leave them alone!

  • Ok email me if you find some screenshots like this in Madden. Then Ill sign up for some Mayhem to insue. lol

  • well gee, maybe people would stop talking about racism if other people would, oh, I don’t know, stop being racist.

  • whiney liberals are whiney

Maybe this guy should realize that by him screaming racism over a game (btw omg zombies origionated in aferican/caribbean culture!!111!!) makes him look quite damn racist himself…

Like Mark said, where’s the outrage over the first 4?

  • Oh, well did you noticed the racism towards Spanish people on RE4?

Is the article making a point about, say, GTA? I mean, come on.

I think that if the infected came from… say… middle west america or north russia, even from south china… Croal would have never thought of it as racism.

  • I dunno. 20% of the world population is black. 20% of the mainstream Resident Evil episodes feature black zombies. This all looks kind of balanced to me. Obviously now they should ship Leon, Jill, Claire or whoever to China and India to make everyone happy

  • The issue is if you look into the world today, black people are by far the most oppressed race on the planet. It would have been totally different if Capcom as a company would have made more respectable black characters in their games, but as you can see, that isn’t the case.

I have been on Capcom’s website stating a case, the best solution to this problem would simply to let a strong black protagonist fight alongside with Chris Redfield.

By doing this, it will not only stop the racism claims, but it will also give more black people a character that they can identify with, like other races identify with character’s in video games. As long as this character isn’t stereotypical, then we are good.

    • Oh you’re an idiot, you’re perpetuating racism by making this an issue. It takes place in Africa where many of todays diseases originated from, So it would make sense that the Zombie outbreak started there as well. What do you want the Africans to look like furry purple bunnies? It’s correct to the geographical area.

Stop calling the African race “black people” as well. That makes you sound as ignorant as the people you are claiming to be “racist”. African Americans in general are the most helped out race in the United States. I just Graduated from high school and applied for colleges about four years ago. Do you know how hard it is for a non-athletic caucasian man to get federal funding or grants to go to college? Absolutely almost none, on the flip side theres grants , scholarships , funding, and all rediculous amounts of money going towards African Americans. So don’t give me bullshit they’re a oppressed race.

As far as I’m concerned people of middle eastern decent are the most povern, oppressed , war ridden race in the world. Check your history books and current news.

      • Maybe the reason you didn’t get into the colleges of your choice is because you can’t spell. Now every white who doesn’t measure up can blame it on affirmation action. Oh wait, now that sounds alot like the so-called “whining” of blacks that life isn’t fair because they’re black and whites get all the advantages.

SO ITS BECAUSE OF YOU WE HAVE TO CARRY THE STUPID SHEEVA AROUND!!!!! FUCK YOU PALGIATOR!

  • Yeah typos abound on the ‘net. But, no, you’re the idiot because this discussion is about whether or not people think Resident Evil V is racist. You turned it into a whine session about how you didn’t get into the college of your choice and tried to blame in on affirmative action. People don’t get into every college of their choice and they don’t blame it on someone else. I couldn’t resist your whining comment. The white have nothing *but* affirmative action. Prime example: Bush - now there’s an idiot. He got (stole) the presidency on nothing more than that he’s white and rich. No non-white that damned stupid could ever have made it. So quit whining about not getting into college and blaming it on others.

Commercial: Affirmative Action - finally good for something - gives whites an excuse when they don’t measure up. Because whites never believe in their hearts that they don’t measure up.

    • I’m not going to argue the idiocracy known as George W. Bush. But it’s a obvious fact that you need to get hooked on phonics. I stated that I could not recieve FUNDING to go to college. I was accepted into many colleges. I’m not going to pompously name drop all of them, I don’t need to defend my intelligence with someone on the internet.

I was just simply stating that race shouldn’t even be an issue. Like I mentioned above, it takes place in Africa. Why wouldn’t the natives be dark skinned? It’s people like you that keep bringing racism into the lime light that continues to perpetuate racism and ignorance.

By the way you’re terrible at argueing/discussing/speaking or whatever you’d like to call it. If you’re going to call me an idiot than thoroughly read what I wrote and rebuttal EACH of my points as I did yours.

As for this being a “whine session.” That was just completely moronic. Anybody that states their opinion or opposes someone elses could be called whining. So wouldn’t that just make you a whiner for bringing up affirmative-action over and over?

  • Darn! I can’t resist you! I wasn’t trying to engage in an agrument. You called me an idiot for calling you a whiner. I called you a whiner, once again, because in a discussion that has nothing to do with AA or getting funding or getting accepted into college *you* felt the need to bring it up here. *Your* response caught my eye because *you* found it necesary to bring up AA in this forum. And I thought, “Whaaa the hell?” and then *you* attacked my intelligence in your response. And since, *I’m* not writing my dissertation either, I didn’t and don’t feel the need to start citing resources and sources and expand or expound on any agrument any more than *you* cited any proof that you didn’t get funding because of AA or blacks or whatever you were whining about. Nor did you feel the need to go over point by point in my initial response - you called me an *idiot* instead. But I gotta say this - *you* people are just so easy to bait, hence the stupid comment about your ability to spell. Jeez, been around *you* people for so long I know what you are going to say before you say it. And, no, an opinion is not necessarily a whine. Apparently, only *you* are capable of making an opinion a platform for whining. It was fun, ta-ta.

  • Oh, bummer, I just reread your original comment and realize you just graduated from high school. You don’t know anything about anything yet. Also, it explains the spelling and grammar and your responses. I didn’t realize I was responding to a kid. I just can’t go there. I’m an adult and I just don’t engage in this kind of a stuff with a kid. “Resident Evil”, duh. I should have known better. Not like me. But, when you post in a public forum, you do leave yourself open.

  • U probably know this already because teenagers know everything. File FAFSA on line at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ first for the pin, then to confirm. Check your state unemployment office - states also have financial aid funding programs. If someone has a disability, state VR agencies will pay for college, including books. I know states that pay $2,500 a semester for tution, $780 meals, $1350 for room, $650 for fees and up to 100% for books. If someone is adopted, they can get aid as well in some states. Pell grants are $2500 a semester. Then u have the subsidized and unsubsidized student loans. Gotta look for the little-known and the unknown. Good luck.

  • He said he just graduated four years ago not that he just graduated. It’s sad to see two people making so many mistakes and such while in a pissing contest over who is more intelligent.
