PS3 firmware 2.3 is scheduled to come out next week, which adds DTS-HD output. That’s pretty damn significant, because you couldn’t visit an AV message board without seeing folks bemoan its (previous) absence. It was the last “piece of the puzzle,” to use a crutch.

With DTS-HD, the PS3 is not only a complete, as far as I know, Blu-ray player, but it’s 100 percent future-proof. If you’re in the market for a Blu-ray player, you’d probably be best off going with the PS3.

  • And to think, I almost bought a an XBOX 360.

  • This is very good news indeed. :)

  • I sure hope this firmware update FIXES the broken streaming and stuttering issues that 2.20 created!

    • 2.0, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 – no streaming problems – provided you ahev a a wireles n router and have a constant 48MB to 54MB stoing signal. WMP + PS3 or TVersity and PS3 – n issues.

  • DTS-HD was the last BIG piece of the puzzle. There’s still the universal remote issue. Since the PS3 uses bluetooth and not infrared, people still need at least 2 remotes for their home theater. Personally, I’m comfortable using my 5 remotes, but some people get worked up about this. There are some hacky solutions involving IR adapters, but these generally don’t allow turning on the PS3 remotely.

Somebody (Logitech, I’m looking at you) needs to create a universal remote with bluetooth support.
