IBM has allegedly developed a new type of digital storage that could greatly increase the capacity of portable devices, while reducing their price. “Racetrack” memory, as this technology is called, uses spinning electrons to store more data and enables these systems to operate faster than regular hard drives.
This technology is similar to flash memory in that it has no moving parts, which reduces the likelihood of mechanical malfunction. However, unlike flash memory, it can write data very quickly and does not wear easily out over time.
For years, scientists have been looking into storing data inside the walls between magnetic domains. However, it has been too difficult and expensive to get significant results. Stuart Parkin, head of the team researching this technology, has said that his team was able to store data in columns of magnetic material on a silicon wafer. The data moves on the columns at high speed, hence the name ‘racetrack’.
This technology is currently considered “experimental”, but IBM anticipates that we will see devices utilizing it within the next ten years.

that is good……but about how much…or smaller……..will they be
Ben, do you ever proof read your material ?
PROOF READ!!
Seriously Ben proof read your work.
I really enjoyed was this article.
the article told me nothing!!!!!!
Much more information in this information week article:

Store data between the WHAT between magnetic domains?
With flash media prices falling, and the introduction of flash hard-drives into new laptops, its logical that major manufacturers will seek out better technology.
Price is definitely going to be higher for those devices incorporating this technology as laptops using flash hard drives are $700-800 more than their traditional counter parts.

Ben, if you ever want to graduate from being an intern you should at least take a glance at your work before you click that publish button.
This isn’t such a big deal unless it is really fast, really cheap, and really really power efficient. There is a new nano-wire memory method that is projected out much, much sooner that boasts it will be able to put over multiple terrabytes into items the size of current USB flash drive units. They are fast and extremely power efficient. I don’t remember for sure, but it seems I read this is being developed by the U of Phoenix or U of AZ.
coming within the next 10 years or so…. cant wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Damn interns…..
lol @ intern abuse.
What? Developed? Wow, this got out of hand. The last thing I heard was that his technology is theoretical due to the fact that our technology cannot affect the levels of quantam mechanics that this technology relies upon, which is the spin of an electron. It is not simple on and off, it’s which way is the electron spinning…
Wow, this guy needs to get his facts straight.
Do you ever check you grammar? Perhaps your spelling?
Either way, despite my informal approach as a response to your article, less than two paragraphs in (and inebriated!) I gave up on reading it due to the improper punctuation.
Please, take the time to get it right!
Cheers.
Ben Gold _ do you proof read?
Anyway, IBM most likely got this from a company acquisition. There is too much red tape and procedure madness now at IBM for any great development to ever be possible again. A leap in technology like they had iwith the 360/370 is not possible. But hey, they are great, they’re IBM. ha, ha.
interesting, thanks for the article
within the next ten years………
great
For every 6 months IBM comes with news that they are in the process of developing world’s fastest processor or fastest memory.
All talk, no stuff.
I am getting tired of IBM news.
The guy writes a news story and all you guys can come up with is, “proof read” and name calling? Buncha what a buttheads.
LEAVE BENGOLD ALONE!
