I dont' see a problem with this, my school requires that you give 1-3 phones numbers and in the case of an emergency they will call and leave a message.

While I appreciate a WWII reference as much as the next guy, that's just a picture of the Washington Square Arch. which is right next to the school.

I hate to be a pragmatist in the middle of first-amendment hysteria, but:
Go to WalMart, buy an AT&T PayAsYouGo phone, activate it online, and go register for classes. Even if they see if it's your phone, or leave a message with your registration "key", it's yours. Problem solved.

No, you SHOULDN'T have to pay the extra $50 to register for classes, but that's one of the prices you pay for living where the government think they are responsible for your safety. That knowledge will keep you much safer than a concealed .45 ;)

That is a serious question - "what if you do not have a cell phone?"

A majority of folks have them, but (contrary to the NYU Registrar) they are not required to survive in this society. Shoot - I know a woman who, after losing her job, did not have a cell phone for a whole year - and neither did her two teenage kids!

I know - totally blasphemous - but it could happen (regardless of the cost of tuition, employment status, etc.).

Do they validate the phone number? I use 666-666-6666 a lot.

Either way - this is an over reaction to events that happen very rarely. You are more likely to get killed in a car accident or die of cancer in 60 years than a shooter on campus which - btw - a sms message wouldn't of helped anyway due to the swiftness of these events.

What if you do not have a cell phone? Just tell them their insane tuition prices have made you too poor to own anything but the clothes on your back.
