“Stained,” the first award-winning film to be shot in 4K on a Red One camera

I’ve got a friend working on a few things with his Red One that will probably win a few awards as well (hey man lets hang out btw), but this film, made for a 168-hour film contest, is apparently quite good. It’s about “a merciless society that segregates its undesirables” — in other words, America — and I understand it is very well-done, having won about half the awards they were giving out: Best film, best actress, best drama screenplay, and more.

  • Jeff Bartsch here, one of the producers on “Stained” – yep, the RED rocked the 4k house in the capable hands of our DP Brandon Lippard. Aside from a toasted LCD monitor on set, the workflow was absolutely flawless. Due to the time crunch, our editor had to cut with the 1080 proxies and did a custom workaround to do a color pass between FCP6 and Apple Color. We’re now doing a 2k picture finish for other festival submissions. Thanks for your interest!

    • Great to hear from you!
Yeah, I understand proxy footage has been the only way to edit RED stuff… I saw a workflow in action and it looked like it worked okay. There’s actually kind of a nice feeling when you see the high res stuff all cut together for the first time and say “Wow, I didn’t think it would look so good!”
