Movie studios say that fans are only a small minority and that changes must be made to appeal to the broader audience who doesn't know the property. In that case, why bother adapting the property? You're not going to get anything from name recognition if the target audience doesn't recognize it and the fans apparently aren't worth concern to begin with. You could call this movie Death Strike 2000 and no one would know. It all boils down to corporate focus groups and Hollywood's ever increasing lack of imagination. Also, it might be a toy/comic/cartoon movie but that doesn't mean there's not a good story to be mined from it.
