Despite the nasty rumors going around about eBay selling Skype, the VoIP provider is poised to introduce an unlimited international calling plan that will cost $9.95/month. The 34 countries included are Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, China, Singapore, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, and most of Europe. This new plan will, of course, include calls to domestic land-line phones and cell phones as well as calls made to cell phones in Canada, China, Hong Kong and Singapore, but no other countries. Maybe I’m missing something here on the latter half about cell phones, but $10/month for unlimited international calling isn’t too shabby.
Do any of the other reputable VoIP services offer a deal such as this?
You didn’t mention where the offer will be available…eg: only to US residents like previous offers?
Also you are missing something on mobiles: it costs a pile more to call a mobile in many countries hence that’s why they’re not included: eg: with over VOIP providers, Australia might be 2c / minute but mobiles are 30-40c/ minute…even for me to call a mobile in Australia from Australia costs me that sort of money: it’s a complete ripoff from the telcos in terms of interchange fees.
It’s unclear from the AP report whether this offer is meant for the US, but chances are it is. We’ll have all the minute details tomorrow when Skype officially announces the new deal.
There are several plans based on user location (North America, Europe, Asia, Brazil, ROW) and call termination countries (individual, continent, worldwide). The good news is the plans are incremental such that you can start with one and upgrade to encompass a larger geography. More details at Skype Journal.
