What the hell? I’m all for modularity and being able to upgrade components individually in a powerhouse computer like the Mac Pro, but $279 for an 8800GT? The card you’re getting is fully $100 cheaper on the street even for a good brand like XFX or PNY (nice deal there).
Reminds me of the infamous Xbox 360 hard drive markup. I know many people will gladly pay a premium for Apple hardware, but this really isn’t even Apple hardware.

Getting Apple to upgrade your MacPro can be quite pricey. Hopefully, people are beginning to recognize that upgrading the parts in your Mac (or PC) is pretty simple!

I recently got a Mac Pro, and I’m pretty glad that I went with the base model. Any of these upgrades I want can be gotten cheaper after market.
lol that’s funny
Had my Mac Pro with 8800GT for 2 months know and I love it, it’s better than my Dell XPS desktop i’m glad I sold it to get this awesome machine 8-Core’s baby
I have a new Harpertown Mac Pro at home with the 8800 GT. Cost me $180 to BTO it (education price). This card is FAST! And it’s $100 less than the 1900 - which was the 8800GT’s predecessor when bought an add-on. In the 2.66 Mac Pro I have at work, I believe it cost my employer $300-350 to BTO the 1900.
The problem with the author’s complaint about $100 (implying Apple’s greed) is the author seems to forget this is the price of a smaller market, Apple has to pay for driver development, which costs hundreds of thousands of dollars. (So says a bunch of hardware developers who refuse to write Mac drivers for their products.)
For a card that’s designed for computers Apple no longer sells, that’s significant, if you ask me. This card is for older Mac Pros that can’t use the first 8800GT that was BTO as of January 2008 (and didn’t ship until the third week of February). How many graphics card manufacturers come out with cards for computers that don’t sell any more? Answer me that. Then tell me about Apple’s greed.
Sure Eric, you have a point… but the real question would still be if macs really need “special” PCI Express 2.0 video cards when it leads to things like this.
