According to its website, Psystar has started shipping the first of its $399 Open computers, which they will pre-install with Leopard for an additional $155.
They also note that they have a new location and signs in the windows, further showing that they might be real, but until I see an Open running Leopard myself, I’m a skeptic.
Still no word from Apple on what action, if any, the Mac maker will take against the unauthorized Mac cloner. We’re staying on this story, as it’s very interesting for a few reasons. If Apple lets Psystar alone and allows the clones to march, which PC makers will be next?

Know when the best time to setup a lawsuit is? When Psystar starts fullfilling orders, shipping them out, gets reviews. Then hit them fast, hit them hard, hit them so that they have to spend all their time in court and fail to satisfy their customers orders. Make their lives miserable. Give wannabes something to think about. Dont forget that Apple is sitting on a massive warchest
Yah, I totally agree. This whole thing is making April interesting.
WTF guys,
Few things,
First, Apple made generic x86 devolper boxes when they were in transition from CPU archs, they were not pretty and artistic.
Secondly, the Mac isnt really anything special anymore, its based on generic cheap intel hardware. apple did this because the PPC was becoming to expensive (less of that grand 80% profit) and was not thermally effeciant; thusly rendering the mac platform no better than an ugly windows box. I work at a computer shop, i see alot of macs come through here, and yes they do have their own BSOD!
Mac guys, im one of you too, but i was broken into macs by OSX86. mac guys need to know this: your mac is a PC, the only thing that separates apple macs from pcs are EFI, but guess what EFI is coming to the pc market very soon, and who knows OS X might just run natively on standard hardware with out hacking it, and you fan boys will be crying like little emos.
also,
there is no craftsmanship left in the apple brand, they outsource all of their manufacturing to taiwan, india and any other low bidder. you are not buying the quality box that the comercials have seduced u into believing, its just a hacked up ibm pc clone with EFI, nothing more, nothing less.
Mike, you’re totally right. I should just give up my MacBook Pro right now and swap over to a Dell or something else.
Why on earth would I keep my laptop which has never crashed, never failed, never had issues, is simple to use, easy to install applications, and good looking? Oh, and never crashed once during a live music performance? Funny, almost *no* live musicians use XP or vista.
But I can get inferior workmanship for less money? Right on!
I’m no fanboy, believe me, but saying there is no build quality is just silly.
So neener neener.
well diem,
my hackintosh is still kickin, and my mac mini isnt. I have had my hackintosh for 2 years, its been working fine. i have a nice looking case that i assembled my self, the mini on the otherhand hasnt been working very well. also, my updates work on my hack, my mac well thats a different story, the leopard graphics update screwed up my leo install on my mini so i had to reinstall and deny the leo graphics update. also, my hack is functioning alot better than most macs i see here in the shop.
however, i think it is a testiment to all those that order a psystar machine to walk with caution: this box is not going to function exactly like a mac, software updates to the core OS can brick it. pro apps and other app updates are fine.
the main point of all this rhetoric is that us mac guys and pc guys are pretty much the same now, if you look deeper into OSX you realize it has problems just like any other os. I see just as many problems with macs as i see with windows boxes. elitest attitude on any side of the fence is not going to help in these dark days.
Hackintosh still Pwns!
I note that as of today, Apple Software Update windows assert:
“Note: Use of this software is subject to the original Software License Agreement(s) that accompanied the software being updated. A list of Apple SLAs may be found here: http://www.apple.com/legal/sla/.”
I think this is the first shot across Psystar’s bow from the Apple Legal fleet.
Assuming Psytar is legally buying those copies of Leopard, Apple will still make money.
Apple’s probably just waiting it out to see what becomes of this “project”.
I wouldn’t doubt that Apple is waiting to see how popular they are. If they are popular Apple will sue Psystar and then release a low cost Mac themselves.
Psystar cannot support Mac software beyond the initial install. They cannot afford to give free updates and customers are not going to pay for these updates beyond X amount. Psystar business model is doomed for failure. Anyone else thinking of making unsupported Mac clones will be in the same boat. Apple has no reason to sue Pystar because Pystar cannot/will not survive anyway. Psytar will soon learn the hard way that you cannot undercut Apples pricing in the long run. What Apple may learn from this is there may be a significant market for a mid-range desktop and make another $1bil off of it to add to the $19bil in cash reserves they already have.
