I put it between various appliances and let it run for several weeks. From there, I can calculate the time since connected, and get an average of monthly usage for that appliance. For example, I can tell you my stand-alone freezer costs about $14 / month. My 42" LCD costs about $6 per month. Two iMac machines cost about $8 / month. Of course this is based on MY usage.
