I'm not an expert on these things, but I would guess that Apple isn't loosing any money here. AT&T would subsidize the phones meaning they are selling them at a loss. The idea being that they would make the money back by drawing in new customers and on the cost of the plan that would be required for the iPhone.

Seeing is believing...I'll wait till the decision is concrete...$200.00 isn't bad, but is Steve Jobs willing to lose $$$$$$$$$$. only time will tell...

Didn't the original contract between Apple and AT&T state that part of the exclusive deal meant that the iPhone price could not be subsidized?

If so does this mean we will see the iPhone on other carriers?

I'm still not convinced that this is for real. Fortune magazine has an unfortunate tendency to print random unconfirmed stuff that doesn't come true.

OtOH, if it is true, I'll be hard-pressed not to get one. $500 is out of my price range, but $200 is just about right.

Hmm...so, as a Verizon customer should I get a cheap ass AT&T phone until the Iphone comes out and get the $200 credit? The only drawback is new customers of the Iphone get the lowest plan for $59.99 with unlimited data and internet. It is a $20 add on for existing subscribers. So, after 10 months the $200 savings would be nil.

On second thought, ill just wait.
