Eventually I had to stick in a friend's desktop and transfer the contents over wifi. Bloody frustrating! As the friend in question had cautioned me about the purchase of the laptop in the first place due to it not having an optical drive and I had completely ignored him, I had to pretend it was all worth it for the smaller form factor.
